Farewell, S.S. Catalina

Above, the S.S. Catalina in Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island during better days.

"Twenty-six miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is awaiting for me..."

Farewell, S.S. Catalina. The famed "Great White Steamer" is being dismantled in Ensenada, Mexico where it sank into the mud in Ensenada Harbor more than a decade ago.

The dismantling of the S.S. Catalina was made necessary to clear the way for a new marina. This ends plans by preservationists to restore the ship and bring her back to San Pedro, California as a floating museum.

I only sailed on the ship once, which was in July 1974. It was a fun ride and, most importantly, it had a full bar!

The South Bay Daily Breeze has a full article on the S.S. Catalina's demise.

Well, another piece of California history is now gone.

My first trip on the S.S. Catalina was the summer of 1964. We rented a house for part of the summer and made two trips. That was also the summer of my first love, at age 14, a little cutie named Sharon. There was a jazz combo that played onboard during the crossing. Their signature song was "I left My Heart in Avalon" I did, that summer.

Happy New Year to you all! See everyone in the Spring. Swatman Monroe promises to come this time.

Best regards,

Stogie Potter
