G-TOUR: Atami and Bullet Train

Above, G-TOUR on the bullet train to Kyoto.

This day, five years ago, had G-TOUR waking up in the Hakone Palace Hotel. This was the nicest hotel on the trip. Unfortunately, we were only there for one night.

The hotel arranged a special Godzilla breakfast menu for us. After breakfast, we got on our bus and headed to the skyway (shown in GMK) at Mt. Komagatake. Here, we were able to view the smoking sulfur pits. Some reenacted the GMK scene of a screaming couple in a gondola car at Baragon's approach.

After the gondola skyway ride, we took a cruise on Lake Ashii, which was very relaxing. The weather was foggy and cool, which was a nice change from the heat and humidity of Tokyo.

We were then bused to Atami for a quick view of Atami Castle, the site of the end of the battle in King Kong vs. Godzilla. From there, we headed to the shinkansen (bullet train) station for the train to Kyoto. The bullet train was comfortable and the views out the windows were interesting.

Our final hotel was the Hotel Gimmond in Kyoto and our luggage was forwarded there earlier. We only had overnight bags for the Hakone/Mt. Fuji part of the trip. We knew we were in Kyoto when we saw the Kyoto Tower Hotel that was blasted by Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2. Nearby, was the Kyoto station featured in the final battle in Gamera 3.

The next day: Exploring Kyoto.
