Elizabeth M. Shayne - 1921 - 2010

Above, Stephanie Shayne Parkin and her mom Betty with a group of us at the Superman Week ceremony in July 2001. Photo courtesy of Lou Koza.

It is with much sadness to report that Elizabeth "Betty" Shayne passed away early today from complications of lung cancer. She was the widow of Robert "Inspector Henderson" Shayne of the Adventures of Superman television show.

It was my pleasure to meet Betty in July 2001 when we held the 50th Anniversary Ceremony for the Adventures of Superman at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration in downtown Los Angeles. She was a very sweet lady with a great sense of humor. I remarked that she looked 20 years younger than her eighty years. This prompted a laugh from daughter Stephanie who said, "That means she had me when she was ten!"

Betty and her daughter Stephanie Shayne Parkin rode with me after the ceremony to Cafe Pinot for the luncheon that followed.

Betty fought a valiant fight against her illness. Her fighting spirit is an inspiration to all of us.

My condolences to Stephanie and her family.
