Happy Birthday, Phyllis Coates!

Today marks the 83rd birthday of televison's first Lois Lane, Phyllis Coates.

She was born Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell on January 15, 1927.



She first portrayed Lois Lane in the theatrical feature, Superman and the Mole Men (1951) with George Reeves as Superman/Clark Kent and continued in the role during the first season of the Adventures of Superman in 1951.

Left, Lois is shocked to see creatures from the center of the Earth in "Superman and the Mole Men."


Following completion of the 1951 episodes, she decided to relinquish the role for another television series. She was replaced by Noel Neill, who originated the Lois Lane role in two serials.
