Tohoku Shinkansen Celebrates 30 Years of Service

The Tohoku Shinkanen (above) is celebrating its 30th anniversary of service in Northeastern Japan.

Kyodo News reported:
TOKYO, June 23, Kyodo
The Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train connecting Tokyo and the northeastern Tohoku region marked 30 years in service on Saturday, with East Japan Railway Co. operating an original Yamabiko train for a commemorative run between Saitama and Iwate prefectures.
The high-speed service began on the 505-kilometer stretch between Omiya Station in Saitama and Morioka Station in Iwate on June 23, 1982, when it was still operated by the publicly owned Japanese National Railways. Construction of the line had begun in 1971.

I rode the Tohoku Shinkansen in April 2006 when I visited Sendai and Matsushima. I caught the train at Tokyo Station and rode it to Sendai Station.  Sendai Station was featured in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993) and, more notably, in Gamera 2: Advent of Legion (1996). Sendai Station was the detonation point  for the Legion flower pod that destroyed Sendai.

Sendai Station is spotlighted in The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan on page 16.
