A new facial recognition system is being tested starting this week at Narita Airport and Kansai Airport this week.
According to The Japan Daily Press:
On Monday of this week, Narita airport, near Tokyo, and Osaka’s Kansai airport began testing a facial recognition program at the automated immigration gates. The purpose is to speed up the immigration process for travelers, as well as confirm the information stored in passports with an electronic chip. The system is merely being put into place for testing purposes, only Japanese nationals will be involved, and it will only last until September 30th.
Narita Airport is the main entry point for international travelers to Japan. Kansai Airport, offshore of Osaka, is also an entry point airport for international travelers.
