10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Pearl Harbor

One of the things on my "bucket list" is to visit Hawaii, particularly Pearl Harbor. Another on my list is to visit Spain.

Regarding Pearl Harbor, Japan Today has an article on "10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Pearl Harbor." As this year marks 70 years since the end of World War II, the number and frequency of articles on World War II will be increasing. People are most interested in what kind of statement Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be making to commemorate the end of the Pacific War.

TOKYO —The surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, marked the day the United States entered World War II. Over three thousand Americans lost their lives in the attack and in 1962 the USS Arizona Memorial was constructed over the sunken battle ship USS Arizona to remember those who lost their lives that day. 

But you already know that. This article will tell you some other things about Pearl Harbor that you may not know.

One additional bit of trivia regarding the USS Arizona Memorial. Singer Elvis Presley was in Hawaii to film Blue Hawaii in 1961 and while there, he performed a benefit concert on March 25 to raise money for the construction of the memorial. $54,000 was raised by the concert. It was Presley's last live stage performance for eight years. For details, go here.
