Sinko de Mayo

A friend posted the true story of this date in history:

I’m getting sick of this stupid idea that May 5th is Mexican Independence Day....it’s not. The real history is that it was a battle between nationalist Mexican forces versus the occupying French, specifically the French Foreign Legion. This is also where Mexicans really began to dislike the Yankee gringos. The French had made it possible to transport eggs and oil together in easily transportable methods. President Juarez new the economic benefit of such commodities and dispatched a large garrison in Puebla to intercept the shipment. Unbeknownst to the American Navy at the time, the frigate “Constantine” engaged the French merchantmen “Le Pue” and sank her along with 2000 barrels of the egg/oil mix. Thinking the French ship if actually being a Confederate naval ship. Colonel Diaz if the Mexican Army quickly notified President Juarez of what the pinche gringos did and uttered the famous of all military quotes, “Sinko de Mayo!!!”
