Numerous gun control bills were filed and had hearings this past week in Santa Fe. As we previously alerted, SB279, a proposed ban on semi-automatic rifles, magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, and other semi-automatic firearms, was filed this past week. The bill would ban the sale or transfer of the banned firearms and magazines. It is currently awaiting a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Here is a pre-written email asking Senators to oppose the bill.
Yet another anti-gun bill was filed this week. SB318, a recycled idea from past sessions, could put gun stores in New Mexico out of business by making it easier to sue a gun store or firearm manufacturer than any other type of business in the state. The first stop for the bill is the Senate Tax, Business & Transportation Committee.
Three gun bills were heard in the House Judiciary Committee this week. First, HB12, the "red-flag" gun confiscation expansion was passed out of the committee on a party-line vote. The bill now heads to the House Floor for a vote by all members of the New Mexico House of Representatives. Second, HB38, the "weapon conversion device" ban was also heard. A comprehensive amendment was brought in the committee that is supposed to narrow the focus of the bill to ban illegally obtained Glock Switches. Due to the significant changes to the bill, it was held back and not voted on by the committee (the amendment has yet to be released to the public). We will continue to work on this bill and alert you accordingly. Third, HB39, which would have included more juvenile criminal records in NICS, was tabled on a tied vote. It is possible for the bill to be brought back, so we will continue to monitor it.
A bill we support will be heard in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee next week. HB162 would repeal the 7-day firearm waiting period passed last year. There is an active lawsuit against that law, but a Federal Judge in Albuquerque denied the injunction asking to stop the law from going into effect while the litigation plays out. That committee hearing on Tuesday the 11th will start at 1:30pm (or later) in Room 317 (Zoom Link).
