Japan's Tourism Industry Taking Major Losses From Coronavirus

Japan's tourism industry is taking a major hit from the effects of the coronavirus that became a pandemic in China.

New Straits Times reported:

TOKYO: Japan's tourism industry will suffer losses in hundreds of million dollars from tourism when its two biggest airlines cancel flights from China. 

Both Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways announced they are slashing the number of flights to and from China because of a slump in demand following the deadly coronavirus outbreak from Wuhan.

Similarly, smaller airlines like Jetstar Japan and Spring Airlines Japan are cancelling services too. 

Jetstar Japan will halt flights connecting Narita with Shanghai from today. 

The flight cancellations will have a snowball chain-reaction on Japanese hotels, travel and tour, shopping malls, food and beverage industries, with an estimated 400,000 Chinese visitors cancelling trips to Japan until March. 

JAL will suspend services connecting Tokyo's Narita International with Beijing and Shanghai, and flights between Chubu airport in central Japan, and Shanghai.
The suspensions will start Feb 17 and are slated to run until March 28. 

ANA will also pull out its Narita-Beijing route from Feb 10 until late March.

Japan Rolls Out Red Carpet To Muslim Visitors

As Japan has become a more popular travel destination, the numbers of people from all backgrounds will be increasing. This is true today of nations with Muslim populations.

According to New Straits Times Online:

HONG KONG: Japan is rolling out the red carpet to visitors from Muslim nations, with the ‘qiblah’ (arrows pointing towards Mecca) appearing in hotel rooms, prayer rooms being signposted in airports and commercial complexes, and halal food becoming a staple in restaurants and the cafeterias of companies that conduct business with firms from Muslim states. 

There has been a steady growth in the number of Muslims opting to settle in Japan. Halal meals first became available on menus about a decade ago, but the nation’s recent tourism boom is driving supply and demand. 

The total number of tourist arrivals in Japan in 2016 surpassed 24 million, well ahead of the 20 million target set by the national government for 2020. And tourists from Muslim nations accounted for a growing number of the arrivals. 

According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), more than 394,000 Malaysians arrived last year, up from 89,000 seven years ago. Similarly, nearly 271,000 Indonesians travelled to Japan in 2016, up from just 63,000 in 2009.
