2023-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle Debuts

Above, a 2023-W American Silver Eagle I bought months ago. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

The U.S. Mint has started selling the 2023-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle coins.

According to Coin News:

Last week, on May 25, the United States Mint started selling the 2023-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle for $76.

U.S. Mint sales figures show collectors purchased a total of 117,035 coins in the first four days, making it the Mint’s best weekly seller. As a comparison, last year’s edition opened with five-day starting sales of 143,738 coins.

As a side note, the Mint also reported opening sales of 803 units, or 32,120 coins, of the 40-coin bulk option for dealers last year, bringing the 2022-dated Silver Eagle’s starting total to 175,858. However, this year, the Mint did not publish any bulk sales data for the 2023-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle.

Unfortunately, with the spot price of silver at $23.38/toz (at this writing), $76.00 for an uncirculated coin is a bit pricey. That's a big mark-up! I paid $80.00 for the proof version set at the National Money Show.

What's the difference between these coins and the brilliant uncirculated 2023-W American Silver Eagle coins JM Bullion has been selling for weeks starting at $41.41? (These are the ones I have.)

Modest Money: SD Bullion vs. JM Bullion

SD Bullion and JM Bullion are the two coin dealers I buy from the most.

I have had no problems with either company and have been satisfied with their customer service.

How do they stack up against each other?

Modest Money took a look at both and compared their products, prices and customer service. I should note that the $500 minimum order requirement of SD Bullion that the article mentions is no longer the case. It was lowered to $250 at the end of March and is totally gone now. It was temporary as the company was swamped with orders and had to deal with a backlog.

Modest Money begins their comparison with:

In the ever-growing market of precious metals, choosing the right bullion dealer can make a significant difference in the value and security of your investment. SD Bullion and JM Bullion are two of the most prominent names in the industry, both offering a wide range of products and services tailored to the needs of precious metal enthusiasts.

We will delve into an in-depth comparison between SD Bullion and JM Bullion, focusing on three key factors: product selection, pricing, and customer service. By providing a detailed analysis, we aim to empower you with the knowledge to make an informed decision on which of these reputable companies is best suited for your specific investment goals and requirements. So let’s dive in and explore the world of SD Bullion and JM Bullion, and how they stack up against each other in the competitive world of precious metals trading.

G-FAN #139

Above, G-FAN #139.

G-FAN #139 arrived in the mailbox the other day.

It has a striking cover of the Heisei Godzilla, which happens to be one of my favorite Godzilla suit designs.

My little contribution to the issue is on the Niue Godzilla vs. Kong silver coins. Even though the coins were minted in 2021, it seems that many Godzilla fans were unaware they even existed (including me). I discovered and blogged about them late last year.

When I blogged about them, I received messages of thanks from people telling me that they were not even aware of them. One gal messaged me that thanks to my posting on Twitter, she was getting the coins for her boyfriend (or husband, I forgot which) for Christmas.

Since I wrote the article (I only had the Godzilla coin at the time), I have since purchased the Kong silver coin at the National Money Show last month. They were licensed by Legendary Pictures.

G-FAN is available by subscription or at your favorite comic book shop. If you don't have a comic book shop that carries it, just Google G-FAN 139 and it'll take you to many who have online ordering.

On the Godzilla vs. Kong coins, JM Bullion carries them.

It will be interesting to see if Niue mints Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire coins once the movie is released.

Got The Kong Silver Coin

Above, the 2021 Godzilla vs, Kong silver coins. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Before heading to the National Money Show last weekend in Phoenix, there was one coin that I planned to get while there.

That was the island nation of Niue's (near New Zealand) 2021 Kong silver coin commemorating Godzilla vs. Kong. I had bought the Godzilla coin and decided to get the Kong one at the show. I figured that a dealer would have them and, sure enough, one did.

The mint run for these coins was at 25,000, so once they're gobbled up, that's it.

The coins contain 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

They can still be bought online at JM Bullion by going here.

By the way, see the next issue of G-FAN for more on these coins.

2021 1 oz Colorized Niue Silver Godzilla vs Kong

A few minutes ago, I saw an ad for a Godzilla vs. Kong colorized coin from JM Bullion.

I hadn't seen this one before (and a couple of others) from the island nation of Niue. I have a silver Godzilla coin from the country.

This is what I saw:

Here's the product details:

In 2021, fans of Godzilla and King Kong were treated to the ultimate movie showdown event with Godzilla vs. Kong. The build-up to this epic clash began in 2014 with the release of Godzilla. This was then followed by a sequel that introduced Kong, plus another Godzilla film. To celebrate this historic face-off, we are offering a stunning line of coins officially licensed by Legendary Entertainment and Toho. Today, 2021 1 oz Colorized Niue Silver Godzilla vs Kong – Godzilla Coins are available to you online from JM Bullion.

If you are a Godzilla and coin collector, this is the best of both worlds.

Modest Money: JM Bullion vs. APMEX

Finding a reputable dealer in gold and silver such as coins, bullion, bars, etc. is very important. I recently bought a couple coins from a front organization of Chinese counterfeiters. That experience told me the stick with reputable dealers that I know exclusively.

I use regularly several dealers and two of them are JM Bullion and APMEX. That is the topic of an article by Modest Money that compares the goods and services of each one. Which is better?

Modest Money begins it with:

Physical gold is an alternative asset that many people wish to add to their portfolios. However, finding a reputable dealer locally isn’t an option for everyone, which is why many investors turn to an online gold dealer instead.

A respectable precious metal dealer offers much more than simple bullion. Many offer bars, coins, collectibles, and even gold IRAs! The exact offerings vary from dealer to dealer, which is why it’s important to do your research beforehand.

In this JM Bullion vs APMEX comparison, we’ll be taking a closer look at two well-known precious metals dealers. Comparing general pricing, services, storage options, and more, we’ll soon see which platform offers a superior service.

Top 10 Silver Coins For Investment

Above, 2022 American Silver Eagles. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Since the U.S. dollar has been dropping like a stone in value (due to Bidenflation) and is not redeemable in gold, silver or any other commodity, people are looking to invest in precious metals.

At over $1,800/troy ounce, gold is not affordable to the average person. However, silver is affordable as a collectible or an investment as its current spot price is $24.31/troy ounce (as per JM Bullion).

As such, silver coins of .999 fine silver are popular.

APMEX, a coin and bullion investment dealer, has an article on the top 10 silver coins for investment.

They begin it with:

Silver coins are a great place to begin building an investment portfolio because they come in various finishes, from Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) to Proof, in a range of designs. Proof Silver coins are ideal for investors because they often contain the same Silver content and design as their bullion counterparts but are perfect for portfolios with high-quality, mirror-like finishes.

Investors typically choose Silver coins from sovereign mints due to their government backing and guaranteed Silver content. These sovereign Silver coins are generally annual releases with a set weight and Precious Metal content with every new release. There are numerous choices for investment-grade, sovereign mint Silver coins for investors to choose, which may appear overwhelming at first glance.

To improve your Silver buying experience, below is a current list of the best Silver top coins for investment. This is not a definitive list but is based on recognizability, liquidity, and the potential return on investment. These are the Silver investment pieces most attractive to investors.

Sales Tax On Precious Metals

In general, states do not collect sales taxes on investments. But, unfortunately, some states haven't gotten the memo and are still applying sales taxes on precious metals within their state and through online purchases of gold and silver, even though those should be considered investments.

My former state of residency, California, and current state of residency, New Mexico, imposes state sales taxes on precious metals even if purchases are made online. This is an atrocious policy.

I have asked a new New Mexico State Senator to author a bill to repeal New Mexico's sales tax on precious metals. So far (to the best of my knowledge), 42 states have repealed sales taxes on precious metals.

JM Bullion, one of favorite coin dealers, has an article on the practice of imposing state sales taxes on precious metals:

With the prevalence of online precious metals dealers these days, people often wonder if they are required to pay sales tax on precious metals purchases, especially purchases made online. Here we will outline some information on this issue for informational purposes only. Nothing contained here should be construed as tax advice, and any questions relating to any tax matters should be directed to your CPA or tax adviser.

Whether or not one must pay sales tax on a precious metals purchase depends on where you are located. Some states require the collection of sales tax while others do not. Some states also may charge sales tax up to a point, and there may be exemptions beyond that point.

For example, a purchase of less than $1,000 may be subject to sales tax but above $1,000 may not be subject to the tax. It is important to also keep in mind that tax laws can change and, therefore, the information contained here is believed to be accurate, but no warranties are being made as to the accuracy. One should always conduct their own due diligence.

At the heart of the matter is whether or not gold, silver and precious metals should be viewed as an investment or even as a currency, or if they are simply just like any other physical property such as clothing, automobiles or furniture. Although it seems that the notion of gold, silver and other precious metals purchases being viewed as an investment and thus not be subject to sales tax may be gaining some traction, many states do, in fact, still charge sales tax on precious metals.

It is important, therefore, to determine if your state charges sales tax on precious metals. The best way to find out about your specific location is to consult your CPA or tax adviser. One can also look to your state’s department of revenue for answers regarding these issues.

Here is a basic guide that outlines some of the states and their policy on precious metals sales tax. For more information, you can view this helpful state by state breakdown.

Silver Spot Price Over $24

Silver has made a big rebound so far today.

According to JM Bullion, it is currently at $24.29/troy ounce.

It'll likely fluctuate during the day. As of now, though, this makes my recent purchases of an American Silver Eagle and Morgan silver dollar at $24.99 each an even better deal.

Godzilla Coin Arrived

The Godzilla Godzilla vs. Kong 2021 silver two dollar coin from the island nation of Niue has arrived.

It came pretty fast after ordering from JM Bullion. For collectors of coins and Godzilla/kaiju items, this is the best of both worlds. It is my understanding that only 25,000 were minted.

Here's the front and back of the coin:
