Rainbow

 

After getting home from dinner at Jerry's Café in Gallup, I flipped on the television to watch the news.

While watching the news, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted this rainbow through the window. I grabbed my phone and took the above photo from my front porch.

It had been a dry monsoon season until about three weeks ago. Now we're getting the badly needed rain.

Monsoon Season Kicking In This Week?

It appears that monsoon season may be finally kicking in this week (but I'm not holding my breath).

The National Weather Service forecast for this week indicates thundershowers will hit the Jamestown, New Mexico area in earnest this week. However, they've been known to be wrong before. Hopefully, we will get the much-needed rain this week. It's been pretty dry lately and I had to water the trees a couple of evenings ago.

The forecast for this week:

Today

Scattered showers and thunderstorms after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 93. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight

Scattered showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming south 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday

Showers and thunderstorms likely after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Light and variable wind becoming west 10 to 15 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

4th of July Weather

Yesterday afternoon through the night, we had some good rain downpours. Plus, we had he best displays of lightning so far this monsoon season. 

It will be interesting how the weather will shape up this evening.

I mentioned earlier that I have a choice of going to the Wild West Rodeo in Grants or to Martin Link's in Gallup this evening. Considering how the weather might be, I have a third choice: just stay at home. I do have some firecrackers I can shoot off. But there's a lot of nearby animals, so the firecrackers may give them heart attacks. 

I'll just have to wait and see.

By the way, as we're in monsoon season, thunderstorms aren't unusual during Independence Day week. Remember, a thunderstorm allegedly brought down a flying saucer near Roswell in July 1947.

More Rain

Monsoon season is definitely here.

I was in Gallup for most of the afternoon and we received several rain downpours every so often. At times, it came down pretty hard. I took Larry Lucier to his physical therapy session and I stayed in downtown Gallup at the Gallup Coffee Co. shop until he was done. 

At least we now know his bus/van doesn't leak. 

We have a 64% chance of more rain today. At least that's according to The Weather Channel app on my phone.

Monsoonal showers and storms will persist through the week and may produce flash flooding across the Four Corners region, especially near recent burn scars.

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Double Rainbow

Last evening, I was relaxing on the sofa after watching Angel and the Badman (1947) and before watching The Sons of Katie Elder (1965) (both starring John Wayne and arrived in yesterday's mail), when I took a glance out the window and saw a double rainbow.

Rather than running to get my camera and risk the rainbow disappearing, I shot some photos with my phone from my porch.
