One of the best sources for information on visiting Japan is the official website of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).
The JNTO has a new look (at least since I last perused it) with easy access for information on Places To Go, Suggested Itineraries, Plan Your Trip and Japan In Depth.
The site also has a trip-planner, map, weather, hotels & ryokan search and restaurant search. It also has travel updates (such as volcanic activity) and other handy items.
The JNTO site has a Movie Channel that contains several videos on visiting Japan as well as a photo gallery.
Of course, you can also requests maps and brochures (they're free) from JNTO. Just go to Contact Us to access links to JNTO regional offices worldwide. It is through the regional office for your country or region that provides the maps and brochures.
And there's a lot more information available through JNTO's website.
I have used JNTO's services ever since my first trip to Japan in 2001. They have always come through with the information requested and never disappointed.
