In two more days, Six Mile Canyon of the Cibola National Forest will be closed for the winter to vehicles. It closes on December 15 and reopens in late March.
It has been a somewhat dry winter so far. The last snow was about two weeks ago. None is forecast in the foreseeable future.
It was closed briefly a couple of days ago (as the usual precaution) due to missile launches from White Sands and Fort Wingate. A friend was deer and elk hunting in the canyon and found the gates closed.
Speaking of elk and Fort Wingate, another friend saw a herd of 30 elk on the Fort Wingate Army Depot property east of the main gate yesterday. Apparently, they know that hunting on the army depot property is not allowed. Animals aren't dumb.
