50 Years Since Vietnam Peace Agreement

50 years ago yesterday, I was at Chaffee Motors (Ford dealer) in Hawthorne, California after taking my dad there so he could pick up his car that had some mechanical work done.

While there, I heard on the radio that former President Lyndon Johnson died. The next evening, January 23, 1973, President Richard Nixon announced the Vietnam Peace Agreement that ended the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

What caused this memory was a Twitter post by the Richard Nixon Foundation of yesterday.

They posted:

Lyndon Baines Johnson died 50 years ago today. The following night on January 23, President Nixon would go on live television to announce the end of the Vietnam War. After the announcement he wrote this letter to Lady Bird Johnson.

It is hard to believe that 50 years has passed. 

Unfortunately, the peace agreement only held for two years.

Hanoi Jane To Receive Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award

"Hanoi Jane" Fonda is to receive an award next month.

Japan Today reported:

LOS ANGELES - Jane Fonda cemented herself into Hollywood allure as a chameleon-like actor and social activist, and now the Golden Globes will honor her illustrious career with its highest honor.

Fonda, 83, will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the 78th annual awards ceremony on Feb 28, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday. A member of one of America's most distinguished acting families, Fonda has captivated and inspired fans along with critics in such films as “Klute” and “Coming Home.”  

Fonda gained notoriety in the the 1970s when she traveled to North Vietnam during the height of the anti-Vietnam War protests and posed for photos next to an anti-aircraft gun. She fell under hefty criticism for her decision — one she repeatedly apologized for — to pose in the photo that gave her the nickname “Hanoi Jane.”

Her actions in North Vietnam caused some American prisoners-of-war to be tortured by their captors. I, for one, do not forgive or forget.

Trump To Visit USS Arizona Memorial

En route to his Asian summits, President Donald Trump will stop over in Hawaii and visit the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

According to West Hawaii Today:

HONOLULU — President Donald Trump’s first official trip to Hawaii and Asia will include a stop at Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial, the White House said today. 

Trump will travel to Hawaii, Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines from Nov. 3-14. 

“The president’s travel will underscore his commitment to longstanding United States alliances and partnerships, and reaffirm United States leadership in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” the White House said in a release. 

On Nov. 3 at the start of the trip, Trump will also receive a briefing from U.S. Pacific Command in Hawaii. The impact on public visits to the Arizona Memorial was not immediately clear.
