A letter arrived in today's mail from former Republican National Committee Chairman Rich Bond.
This isn't unusual as I get plenty of mailers from GOP leaders. The exception this time is that Bond is supporting Democrat Rep. Howard Berman. In his letter, Bond refers to Berman as "my friend." WTF?!
That is like Ronald Reagan referring to Nicaragua dictator Daniel Ortega as "my friend." Berman, along with Rep. Henry Waxman, set up a political machine in California spreading their brand of radical liberalism. Their tactics include putting carpetbagger candidates in districts against Republican incumbents (anybody remember Maurice "Jack" Mayesh against Assemblyman Paul Bannai?).
Berman and fellow Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman find themselves in a newly-drawn congressional district. The letter from Bond decribes Berman as "universally respected" by people of both parties and Sherman as "the poster boy for term limits."
That isn't all. The letter contains a letterhead of prominent Republicans as "Republicans for Berman." They include:
Supervisor Mike Antonovich
Supervisor Don Knabe
Former Mayor Richard Riordan
Galpin Motors Owner Bert Boeckmann
L.A. Police Commission V.P. Alan Skobin
Sorry, no matter how many big name Republicans are involved, there's no way in hell that I would ever remotely consider voting for Howard Berman. I am supporting Mark Reed for Congress.
This isn't easy as some of these Republicans are friends and those who I respect.
Reed may have little chance to win this November, but I am not about to become a political whore and check my principles at the door!

Armand, why are you shocked?
I have tried to point out that the so-called "differences" between the two Socialist parties are an illusion created by PR frims at election time.
That is why when the GOP took control of Congress from 1995 to 2007 not one single government spending program created by Democrats was abolished. In fact government grew larger under the GOP.
PREDICTION - November will see a run-off between two Democrats in your district.
So who will you support when the runoff comes down to Berman and Sherman? There are some differences between the two and Berman is clearly the preferrable candidate for any Republican.
So what happens when the runoff is between Berman and Sherman. Will you not vote? There are only two real choices in this district and the preferrable one is Berman for anybody that knows the differences between the two.
I'll cross that road when I get to it.
I received mine too and am disgusted beyond words.
Is it any wonder the CAGOP is all but dead here in California?
With friends like this...
The time may already be here. Berman is no longer the liberal he once was and Sherman is a Tom Hayden Democrat (his consultant was Hayden's consultant). Sherman is openly telling people that his best chance is for Republicans to vote for Reed and to use his more liberal supporters to beat Berman in the primary. You may think you are being honest and I can respect that, but it is no different from dropping a brick off a roof and claiming to be surprised when someone below got hurt.
Possibly. But there's another scenario to consider: the Democrat vote may be so split that if all the GOP voters vote for Reed, Reed may be the number 2 vote-getter to make it to the general election.
Reed could make it to the general election, but he couldn't win then. Even Tom Hayden himself would beat Reed in November.
I have to agree with Anonymous here, you have to accept our district is going to a democrat so which one do you want? The one with a proven track record in congress to actually get things done - on both sides of the aisle - or someone who seems to go whichever the wind blows? The latter certainly makes me nervous. I'm going with Berman. No question about it. Reed can't win. I was at the debate tonight. He can't even come close to winning.
