If one is fit enough, a guided walk on snowshoes in Lassen Volcanic National Park just may be right up their alley.
Snowshoes expand the possibilities for winter wandering.
“Walking on snow with snowshoes is a fantastic way to exercise while being outside in winter," says Shanda Ochs, guide at Lassen Volcanic National Park. "It encourages exploration in snowy environments where otherwise is very difficult or impossible to do.”
Lassen Park’s popular ranger-led snowshoe walks are offered at 1:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through April 1. Participants meet at Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center at the national park’s southwest entrance off Highway 36. The ranger demonstrates how to put on snowshoes, which are provided, and the technique for walking with them. Then the adventure begins.
The walks are 1 to 2 miles, usually taking about two hours. They cover moderately strenuous terrain through the forest.I visited Lassen Volcanic National Park last August. There still was snow on Lassen Peak and different areas.
