Mummies, Dinos & Dolls

Above, a publicity photo of Tom Tyler as Kharis.

A relaxing evening of movie-watching began after I returned home from Crazy Tokyo Sushi for dinner.

I was in the mood for a couple of Universal's 1940s mummy movies tonight.

I started it off with The Mummy's Hand (1940) Starring Dick Foran, Peggy Moran and Wallace Ford. This was the first of the Kharis mummy movies. This one featured Tom Tyler as Kharis. George Zucco appears as a high priest who is in charge of protecting the tombs of Kharis and Princess Ananka.

Following that, I watched the follow-up, The Mummy's Tomb (1942). This one takes place 30 years after The Mummy's Hand. It is interesting that exposure to tana leaves* seems to cure baldness. In The Mummy's Hand, Zucco is bald. But in The Mummy's Tomb, Zucco, although aged, sports a good head of long white hair! Zucco had to boil the tana leaves to feed the fluid to Kharis. Oh, yes. Lon Chaney Jr. took over the Kharis role in this one.

*The fluid from three tana leaves keeps Kharis alive and the fluid from nine tana leaves gives him movement. Remember that!

As fate would have it (or the Gods of ancient Egypt), after watching the mummy flicks, I received a couple of photos from writer, producer and director Donald F. Glut of The Mummy's Kiss: Second Dynasty of the movie's star, Christine Nguyen. (In that movie, Christine's character makes a joking reference to the 1940s mummy movies.)

Don had Christine over today to do a wrap-up photo shoot for his dinosaur collection website. The website is http://www.collectorsquest.com. Once in, search: Don Glut's Dinosaurs. To see the photos, go to Don's site!

Don has a great collection of dinosaur fossils and dinosaur-themed collectibles. And, he has a number of models to spice up interest. Take a look!

Left, Christine from an earlier shoot.
