It appears that today's release of the new Japanese Godzilla poster by Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. took our friends at Toho by surprise.
Or, at least some of them at Toho.
I was talking to a friend who is with Toho Cinemas about the poster and he said he had never seen it until I sent him an email of it. He said that the poster contained no information, official or unofficial, on the artwork itself. And, it offered no official merchandise.
Toho Co., Ltd. is distributing Godzilla in Japan.
He said the top line on the poster says, "Worldwide Box Office No. 1". He was unsure exactly what that even meant. I speculated that it means that Godzilla did reach number one in worldwide box office receipts (it dipped a bit, but regained the top spot again thanks to China). He said it is up to Japan to put Godzilla over $500 million in box office receipts.
He guessed that the poster was sent to Toho by Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros., but it only reached the marketing department and not the exhibition side. Which, he said, would not at all be surprising.
