Snakes, Why Does It Have To Be Snakes?

Yesterday morning, I saw this on my walkway while I was taking the trash out:

I had no idea what kind of snake it was, but according to some in our community Facebook page, it was a garden snake. It had an orange underside. The snake was headless. I am guessing one of the feral cats I feed got to it.

Apparently, snakes are out and about in New Mexico. 

One resident of our community posted:

Idk but they’re everywhere! I ran over 3 snakes this morning before I got to the fire station.

I guess I'll have to carry my .38 with the snake load ammo whenever I'm out in the yard. 

Whew! It Was Only A Bull Snake!

Welcome to country living!

This morning, I was just putting food and water for a couple of stray cats in the front yard and I heard a noise nearby. I looked and saw a large snake moving away. I jumped back. I looked and it had no rattles. It was a bull snake. He disappeared into (apparently) a burrow.

I have been told that bull snakes kill rattlesnakes along with rodents.

Had he been a rattlesnake, I would have grabbed my .38 revolver and blown it to kingdom come. I have a special varmint (buckshot-like) load for my gun that I bought a few months ago at Warrior Women Gun Shop a few doors away from me.

As we are now in springtime and getting nearer to April, I had been advised to beware of rattlesnakes. I was told that they generally come out of hibernation in April. In fact, a former resident of my home had lost a dog to a rattlesnake.

When I visited Warrior Women Gun Supply last week, I was shown some special .38 SPL/.357 Magnum "Shotshell" ammo. I was told that this ammo is very effective against rattlesnakes. These rounds can blow their heads clean off!

Today, I went down to the Flying J to pick up my mail and to have lunch at Denny's (it was a cheeseburger, in case you were wondering). On the way home, I stopped at Warrior Women Gun Supply to pick up some rounds of "Shotshell" ammo. I figured that I should get it now before the other locals buy up the supply.

It's a good thing I never got rid of my two .38 SPL/.357 Magnum revolvers. They may just come in handy this coming snake season.

You gotta ask yourself a question, "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, snake?

Snake Season In Joshua Tree National Park

It is now May and that means it's snake season!

The Hi-Desert Star has a new article on avoiding snake bites in Joshua Tree National Park.

It begins with:

MORONGO BASIN — April showers bring May flowers and May temperatures bring out the rattlesnakes. 

Rattlesnakes lay dormant in the winter, but starting around May and ending in October, they come out to enjoy the sun. Joshua Tree National Park is home to seven varieties of rattlesnake: Mojave Desert sidewinder, Colorado Desert sidewinder, speckled, Mojave green, red diamond, Southern Pacific and Western diamondback rattlesnakes. With over 2 million visitors to the park each year, George Land, public information officer for the national park, offered some information on rattlesnake safety.

Snake On A (Bullet) Train!

A shinkansen (bullet) train had to make an emergency stop when a snake was discovered on board.

According to Travel + Leisure:

A passenger on a Japanese bullet train sat for 50 minutes on Monday without noticing that a python was wrapped around his armrest. 

Almost an hour into the train ride from Tokyo’s JR station, a nearby passenger noticed the snake on the seat in front of him and told the train’s conductor, the Associated Press reported.

A 100-foot monster has allegedly been sighted by helicopter in Borneo and photographs have surfaced.




The Telegraph reports:

An aerial photograph that appears to show a gigantic snake swimming along the remote waterway has emerged, sparking great concern among local communities.

But it is not clear whether the photograph is genuine, or a clever piece of photo-editing. Some suggested the 'snake' was in fact a log or a speed boat and others complained the colour of the river in the photo was too dark.

The most common theory is that the photo has been manipulated on a computer.

The image has even stumped the New Straits Times newspaper in Kuala Lumpur, which suggested readers decide for themselves.

However, on the banks of the river, villagers are convinced of the massive serpent's existence and have even given it a name, Nabau, after an ancient sea serpent which can transform itself into the shapes of different animals.

It would be interesting if it turned out to be real. What do you think?
