Japan's tourisn industry is beginning to think "outside of the box" in coming up with ways to lure foreign tourists to Japan. Japan's tourism industry was hit hard by the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake.

TOKYO, June 17 (AP) - (Kyodo)—The Japan National Tourism Organization said Friday it has compiled an English-language map that introduces tourism spots and theme parks related to Japanese "anime" as part of efforts to attract more foreign tourists.
I have advocated that the Japanese tourism industry also market tours to Japan to fans of Japanese science-fiction and fantasy movies.
JNTO's targeting of the anime fan market seems to be a good start. However, anime fans tend to be younger than the baby-boomer generation (i.e., people with travel money) whose first exposure to Japanese pop culture were through Japanese science-fiction movies.
