A Visit To Japan's Imperial Palace

Text and Photos by Armand Vaquer

One of the main tourist attractions in Tokyo is the Imperial Palace. The Imperial Palace is located in the Chiyoda area of Tokyo and close to Tokyo Station. It is an easy walk from Hibiya. I first visited the Imperial Palace during my first trip to Japan in 2001.

The Imperial Palace is the home of Japan's Emperor. The current Emperor is Emperor Akihito (or Emperor Showa). The Imperial Palace is a park-like area that is built on the the former location of Edo Castle in central Tokyo. The main palace grounds are surrounded by moats and is fortified by massive stone walls.

The palace complex includes the Imperial Residence, Imperial Household Agency, Biological Laboratory, Chōwaden Reception Hall, Imperial Palace Plaza and East Gardens. The East Gardens are open to the public on designated days.

The main entrance to the Imperial Palace is accessed by the Nijubashi Bridge. Don't try getting through as the gate is manned by guards.
