Climbers of Japan's Mount Fuji face paying entrance fees around-the-clock next year, according to the Mainichi Shimbun.
They wrote:
Climbers of Mount Fuji face having to pay round-the-clock entrance fees starting next year, a move partly aimed at curving overnight hikers attempting to dodge the financial burden, it has been learned.
Admission to the country's highest peak currently costs 1,000 yen per daytime climber between July and August. However, a joint expert panel of Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures proposed in Tokyo on Nov. 7 that the fee should be collected 24 hours a day, calling for fair sharing of burdens among climbers including so-called "bullet climbers" -- those who hastily ascend the peak overnight without resting at mountain lodges.¥1,000 is roughly $10.00.
