NMSSA: 2022 NM Legislative Session is Finished

Sine Die! The 2022 New Mexico Legislative Session is officially over. And with the conclusion of the session, both of the gun control bills we opposed died in the committees they were tabled in. HB9, the firearm owner liability & mandatory storage bill, was tabled in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee on a 5-0 vote. HB156, the magazine capacity ban bill, was tabled in the House Appropriations and Finance Committee on a 13-5 vote. Both of those votes were bipartisan. HB68, the omnibus crime bill, was amended to remove sections of the bill that could impact law-abiding gun owners.

I would like to thank NMSSA members, supporters, and donors who worked so hard to make this happen this legislative session. NMSSA has a great base of support from across our state and a committed board of directors who volunteer their time to protect our rights and promote the shooting sports in New Mexico. In particular, I want to thank Anthony Segura, James Fraser-Paige, and Thomas Souther for all their work during the legislative session. Fighting for our rights in Santa Fe is very much a team effort, and we are fortunate to have a great team here at NMSSA. Finally, I want to thank NMSSA members for the trust you have put in me to be the president of this association for the last four years.

We have a crucial election coming up this November in New Mexico and we are going to need Second-Amendment supporters to get involved to make sure we have good representation in Santa Fe. But right now, I would encourage everyone to spend some time on the range to enjoy the right we fight to protect.

Zac Fort
President, NMSSA
