NMSSA Legislative Update February 10, 2022

Today, just a few hours before the committee meeting was supposed to start, HB9, the mandatory storage and firearm owner liability bill, was put on the agenda for the House Appropriations and Finance Committee. But in the fast-paced meeting, the bill was tabled on a bipartisan vote with Democrats from rural communities joining with the Republicans and Independent member of the committee to table the bill.

This means that both HB156, the proposed magazine ban and HB9 have been tabled in House Committees with a week to go in the 2022 Legislative Session. It is possible that the bills could be revived, so until sine die, we will be carefully watching them and we will send an alert if there is any movement. Additionally, we have successfully lobbied for good amendments on HB68, an omnibus crime bill. We will be carefully watching that bill as well to to make sure we don't lose progress on it.
