Another Storm Approaching Roswell

Like yesterday, an approaching storm is coming in from the southeast towards Roswell, New Mexico. And, like yesterday, it is preceded by a rainbow. I can hear thunder in the distance.

I went out and took some photos of the rainbow.

Here they are:

Since yesterday's storm didn't bring down any UFOs in Roswell, maybe tonight's will?

Roswell UFO Festival - Day Two

Today, Jess and I spent around three hours roaming the UFO Festival. I think we were well spent from yesterday. With the rains last night, it was quite humid outside and warm. The "cow flies" were a nuisance. They are very agressive and are from the dairies in the area. Both of us were on the "worn out" side from yesterday.

We tried to take in some lectures, but they were either moved to other venues or they were too far to walk to. The festival would benefit greatly if Roswell had a convention center or a large hotel (like the Crowne Plaza Hotel near Chicago's O'Hare Airport where G-FEST is held) were all the lectures and panels could be held in meeting rooms in one central location. The UFO Festival is spread out over many blocks and, sometimes, miles away ("scattered" is the best way to put it).

There is one conclusion that this trip made me come to: I need a motor scooter (that seats two, at least) to get around in. Roswell has limited public transportation and we had to either walk or rely on taxi cabs to get from the RV park to the festival. I had to leave the RV at the RV park so Sierra has air conditioning. Previously, I've made use of private tour companies and park shuttles (who pick up passengers at campgrounds).

We did manage to try out some freshly-made potato chips, which were very good.

We noticed bigger lines at the UFO Museum today than yesterday. It was a good thing we toured it on Thursday.

Still, the UFO Festival was fun to attend and we were glad we attended.

This was the first year that guided tours (by bus) to the 1947 UFO crash site were offered. The starting price: $65. It is my opinion that they'd have more "takers" if the price was lowered to around $30. They'd make a lot more by the increased numbers of people. But, as I said, that is just my opinion.

Tomorrow is going to be a long drive, about 320 miles to get to Jamestown. Fortunately, the roads are good and there's plenty to see along the way.

2015 Shasta Airflyte 16 Reissue Travel Trailer

At the campsite next door is a 2015 Shasta Airflyte 16 Reissue Travel Trailer. I always thought the Shasta trailers looked cool, in a retro sort of way.

According to Roaming Times:

For 2015, Shasta has created a nearly exact replica of it’s iconic 1961 Shasta Airflyte 16SC Travel Trailer complete with the legendary Shasta wings! Shasta started in 1941 and to commemorate their 75th anniversary they are producing a limited construction of 1,941 trailers and will be available in all three original colors; Matador Red, Seafoam Green, and Butternut Yellow.

I was talking to the lady of the trailer and I told her that it looks good. Her response was, "It's a piece of junk!" She admits that she's still learning how everything works. She admired my Minnie Winnie. I told her I've had no problems with it.

Painting Released From U.S. Customs

A few hours ago, the painting, "Three Mesas", was released from U.S. Customs in New York and is now en route to Jamestown, New Mexico.

It seems it took longer for it to go through our Customs than it did through Russia's Customs in St. Petersburg.

I would hazard a guess that it will arrive in Jamestown around Thursday.

Rain Tonight?

Off to the southeast of Roswell is a big thunderhead. It was drawn to my attention by a neighboring camper who said that a rainbow was behind me, while I was sitting outside.

Sure enough, I took a look and there it was.

I went inside the RV to grab my camera and went out and took some photos. While doing so, I heard some thunder.

Millionaires Fleeing California After Tax Hike

Big-spending/high taxing liberals in California are driving high income people out of California, according to a new study

Forbes.com reported:

According to new research released by Charles Varner, associate director of the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality, California lost an estimated 138 high-income individuals following passage of the Proposition 30 income tax increase championed by Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and approved by Golden State voters in 2012.  

This new research by Varner updates a previous paper released six years ago that looked at domestic migration to and from California following a 2004 income tax hike.  

“One reason we wanted to update our previous paper is that this tax change in 2012 is the largest state tax change that we have seen in the U.S. for the last three decades,” Varner said. 

Prop. 30 raised the state’s top income tax rate by 8%, increasing it one percentage point from 12.3% to 13.3%, which is now the highest state income tax rate in the nation. Prop. 30 also hiked the tax rate on income between $300,000 and $500,000 by two percentage points, and raised the rate on income in excess of $500,000 by three percentage points.

In 2016, California voters extended the Prop. 30 income tax increases, which were originally scheduled to expire in 2019, until 2030. There will be an effort to extend those income tax hikes yet again prior to their expiration in 2030; book it now.  

Varner’s new research examined taxpayers who were and were not hit by the Prop. 30 rate hikes. He found that in the two years before the Prop. 30 tax hike was imposed (2011 and 2012), net in-migration for both groups “was positive and roughly constant.” Yet following 2012 and the passage of Prop. 30, net in-migration dropped for households that were facing an effective tax increase of 0.5 percent or more. The reduction was greatest for households facing the highest effective tax hike, according to Varner and his coauthors, who include Allen Prohofsky of the California Franchise Tax Board. 

This isn’t surprising for those who are familiar with other attempts to soak the rich with punitive state income tax hikes on high earners. 

Who will be left holding the bag? Lower income earners. Further down in the article, the state of Maryland did the same thing as California and drove out high-income earners.

Temperatures

California is having a heat wave, I've heard.

I checked online for the temperature for Tarzana a little while ago and it was 112° there. Here in Roswell, it is 89°.

Back home in Jamestown, it is only 80°!

I was sitting outside under the awning and was quite comfortable. I actually dozed off a bit.

Roswell UFO Festival - Day One

Today (at least 4 1/2 hours) was spent wandering around the UFO Festival.

Main Street was closed off to traffic and vendors set up booths to sell food and merchandise.

While waiting for our taxi to arrive in front of the Trailer Village RV Park, we spotted this bumper sticker on a motorhome:

My idea to tour the UFO Museum yesterday paid off as there was a long line of people waiting to get in:

We had a good time today. We're looking forward to heading out again tomorrow.

"Roswell" (1994) Movie Props

At the International UFO Museum & Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico, props used in the first movie about the Roswell Incident are on display.

The movie, Roswell was made in 1994 and was based on the book, UFO Crash At Roswell.

One Doesn't Give Up So Easily!

Since someone was hogging up the time of author of Donald R. Schmitt (Witness To Roswell), I had a couple of questions for him that I wanted to ask but couldn't.

I looked up his email address and sent my questions to him via email.

Maybe I'll get the chance to talk to him this weekend, but if not, this will have to do. 

ECV Plate Drawing Some Attention

My E Clampus Vitus plate on my RV seems to be drawing attention on this trip.

First, the owner of the Happy Trails RV Campground in Moriarty, New Mexico asked me about Clampers. I explained it to him.

Next, a few minutes ago, a fellow camper at the Trailer Village RV Park in Roswell walked by to use the dumpster. On his way back, he said that he didn't know there are Clampers in New Mexico. I explained that the Lost Dutchman Chapter covers New Mexico and Arizona. He said that he has relatives in ECV in the San Francisco Bay Area.

He said that he will look into the Lost Dutchman Chapter.
