John Wayne's Passing 43 Years Ago

Above, the eyepatch John Wayne wore in True Grit at the John Wayne:
An American Experience in Fort Worth, Texas. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Memories of June 11, 1979 are forever emblazoned in my mind.

This was the day I started my career as an insurance claims examiner. It was also the day John Wayne passed away from a long battle with cancer at the UCLA Medical Center.

Cancer has touched millions of people. It had touched my family as well. My dad passed away from lymphoma in 1999. That is why I am interested in the research work the John Wayne Cancer Foundation is conducting.

The official John Wayne official Facebook page posted the following today:

On this day 43 years ago, John Wayne lost his battle with cancer. We carry on his legacy through @joinjohnwayne with the mission to bring courage, strength, and grit to the fight against cancer 💪🏼 (photo by @johnhamiltoncollection )
