John Wayne's "Awe" In "The Greatest Story Ever Told"

Above, John Wayne as a Roman Centurian in The Greatest Story Ever Told. MGM photo.

This has to go down as the greatest movie urban legend ever told.

In the 1965 movie, The Greatest Story Ever Told, the story of the life of Christ, John Wayne made a cameo appearance at the end of the movie as a Roman Centurian. After Christ was crucified, Wayne looked up at him and said his only line, "Truly this was the son of God!"

A story about this scene has been floating around since 1965.

According to Legends Revealed:

Wayne appears at the end of the film as a Roman Centurion tasked with guarding Jesus Christ on the cross. As Jesus expires from the mortal plane, Wayne’s character exclaims, “Truly this was the son of God.”

Well, as the story goes (here is one of a gazillion different versions of this story, all of which are essentially the same)…

[T]hat at the rehearsal for “The Greatest Story Ever Told’, The Duke, playing the Roman soldier who speared Jesus on the cross, said rather flatly: “Truly he was the son of God”. the director said: “Not like that, say it with awe!”

Obligingly Wayne repeated his line: “Aw, truly he was the son of God.”

It’s a great story, and definitely one that I could completely see happening since, according to the story, it is just a one-off joke, presumably made to cut the tension during the filming of the elaborate epic film.

But DID it happen?

Both John Wayne and George Stevens have independently denied the story, and in both of their cases, they noted that the story IS funny, but that it did not happen (so it’s not like a case of people being so embarrassed that of COURSE they’d deny it). The film also featured a young Roddy McDowell as the apostle Matthew. Years later, McDowell claimed that he was there when Wayne shot his one line, and that the “aw, truly” scene never actually took place. And I’ve never heard or read of an eyewitness claim OTHERwise.

I first read this story back in the mid-1970s in a biography of Wayne.

Black Lives Matter = Marxist Uprising

Rush Limbaugh, during his show today, covered a lot of topics today (as he took yesterday off), but his comments concerning the desecration of monuments and the toppling of statues needs to be emphasized. Those desecrations are only minor steps towards the bigger goal of tearing down this country.

They (ANTIFA and the Black Lives Matter organization) aim to tear down everything from national monuments and, incredibly, statues of Jesus Christ.

This isn't about the killing of George Floyd by the police. That initially was the excuse for the mayhem. It should be obvious to everyone by now.

He said:
It is a fabulous record to remind people of prior to the virus. It is overwhelming, particularly for African-Americans, it was through-the-roof great. The economy, unemployment, wages, all of that, something that is purposely being torn down. And I think, you know, the American people have a clear choice here, and it’s unlike a choice that they’ve ever had. This is not a choice between Republicans and Democrats. This is a choice between America, as founded, and bye-bye America, as founded. And that’s exactly what’s on the plate. That is not an exaggeration.
It is abundantly clear, and it has been abundantly clear to me for years now, these people on the left, they have no interest in correcting what they think are America’s mistakes. They’re tearing down statues. They’re tearing down artwork. They’re tearing down anything with a link to the past in this country. It’s not because the past offends them. It’s because they’re getting ready to wipe out this country. They’re getting ready to totally scrap it and start again. They believe the country is irredeemable.
Folks, it’s a bunch of Marxists. We find ourselves in this campaign not against Republicans, Democrats. This is the American people versus Marxism. It’s the American people versus communism. In stark terms, it’s exactly what we face here.

"The Real Face of Jesus?"

The only Easter thing I did was to watch a History Channel video on the Shroud of Turin, "The Real Face of Jesus?"

Whether or not the man whose image is on the shroud is Jesus doesn't matter. This is an interesting video and worth a look.

Happy Easter!

With the news that new tests on samples of the Shroud of Turin date it to the first century, the time of Jesus Christ, I stumbled upon a YouTube video of a program from last year by the History Channel, "The Real Face of Jesus."

Whether or not the Shroud of Turin was actually the burial linen of Jesus, it is an interesting program on how modern technology was able to re-create the face of the man whose image is on the Shroud.

As today is Easter Sunday, it would be an appropriate program to watch and I highly recommend it.

He has risen

Luke 24:

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?

“He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”
