50th Anniversary of the Baldwin Hills Dam Disaster

The 50th anniversary of the December 14, 1963 Baldwin Hills Dam Disaster in Los Angeles comes one week from tomorrow.

It was back then that a hilltop reservoir wall gave way and flooded the Baldwin Hills neighborhood below it, killing several people.

Above, a flooded shopping center at La Brea and Rodeo in Baldwin Hills.

I remember the KTLA Channel 5 telecopter live broadcasts of the reservoir wall's collapse. The video above shows what we all saw back then.

A commemoration will be held December 14 at the former dam site.

Wow. Great post. I have no memory at all of this event.

I remember it well. It flooded the parking lot of Viewpark Hospital in Baldwin Hills where I had my tonsils removed a few years before. - A.
