Nine Years Ago, They Said "Godzilla Was Dead, Long Live Godzilla"

Nine years ago today, The Japan Times published an article, "Godzilla is dead, long live Godzilla" which reviewed the history of Toho's franchise that began in 1954 with Godzilla and lamented the ending that year (2004) with Godzilla Final Wars.

Following the release of Godzilla Final Wars, Japan's biggest star was put on (at least) a 10-year hiatus. As producer Shogo Tomiyama said at the time about Godzilla's big send-off, “Our aim was to make not the last Godzilla film but the best one,” he explained. “But because we made the best-ever Godzilla film, we can’t make any more, for another generation at least. When children ask me if they will ever see Godzilla again, I tell them that when they grow up they will create a new type of Godzilla film. I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with.”

It is interesting to read that December 15, 2004 article now as anticipation over the upcoming Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. big-budgeted Godzilla (including some screenings in 3D ) has taken a gigantic jump with the release of the teaser trailer last week.

It has been reported that average movie-goers have joined hardcore fans in expressions of ecstasy when the Godzilla trailer appears on-screen during showings of  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. If this is an accurate indicator, it seems that the time is ripe for the return of Godzilla, even though the studio producing the movie isn't Toho.
