The first time I have ever seen a bear in the wild was in 1998 when my daughter and I went to Sequoia National Park.
Near our campground, and along the road, a mother bear and her cubs were in a meadow. They attracted a number of people who stopped to gawk.
Since then, the only other time I've seen bears at a national park was in Yellowstone National Park in 2015. Again, it was a mother bear and cubs. But we were safely inside a tour bus.
