In this Video Essay, we take a look at Godzilla Minus One and why it destroys Modern Hollywood. Toho has released a new Godzilla Movie with a budget that puts Hollywood Blockbusters to shame. With the inflated movie budgets, it has led to incredibly low box office returns for major Hollywood franchises, the budget disparity on display between Godzilla Minus One and Hollywood Blockbuster movies is honestly mind-blowing. Director Takashi Yamazaki has delivered a thought-provoking, complex, layered, and mature Godzilla film that is without question one of the best films of 2023.
Above, the Winchester Model 12 I bought last April. Photo by Armand Vaquer.
For those who are Winchester shotgun enthusiasts, here's something for you.
MSN has posted a slideshow of Winchester's shotguns that made history.
The Winchester Model 12 pump-action shotgun is the one I have. I bought it earlier this year and, according to its serial number, it was made in 1919.
They begin it with:
Today, Winchester’s shotguns are prized by collectors and hunters. The Model 1897 and Model 12 remain popular among cowboy action shooters and vintage gun enthusiasts, while the Model 1300 and 1400 are still used by hunters and sport shooters worldwide.
In many ways, Winchester’s shotguns are the story of American ingenuity and innovation, a testament to the company’s enduring influence on firearm design and manufacturing.
It’s a legacy that will continue to inspire and influence gun enthusiasts for generations.

Before her passing in 2015, actress Maureen O'Hara was a collector of film memorabilia.
The largest item in her collection was the Irish jaunting or sidecar from the movie The Quiet Man (1952). It was seen throughout the movie.
Above, the jaunting car with a monitor showing it in The Quiet Man.
After her passing, her estate notified the John Wayne Birthplace Museum that it is available but they'd have to act fast and get it. After a professional appraisal, the Museum bought it for the appraised amount of $75,000.
I saw the jaunting car when I visited the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum last month in Winterset, Iowa.
After it was acquired, the aging wood was restored and new seat cushions were made.
Donations to the Museum towards the jaunting car are still being accepted.

World Atlas has posted an article on 7 "slow-paced" towns to visit in New Mexico.
Of the seven, I've been to two of them: Gallup, because I live near it and Mesilla, which is next to Las Cruces (I went to the Southern New Mexico State Fair & Rodeo in 2021 in Las Cruces). I think the restaurant I ate at one night was in Mesilla.
The article begins with:
New Mexico’s nickname, the "Land of Enchantment," is spot on with its southwest culture, colorful desert scenery, and rugged mountain landscapes offering a truly memorable experience. Whether you enjoy ziplining through the mountains, local live music, or exploring ancient Indigenous cliff dwellings, these seven New Mexico towns will give you the relaxation you need for a change of pace. So, get ready to unwind by natural springs, hike through canyons, and explore the kind of beauty that only New Mexico can offer.
Above, the 26 Bar Ranch ranch house last year. Photo by Armand Vaquer.
Last year, while driving to Tombstone, Arizona for the spring clampout, I drove to Eagar, Arizona to see the 26 Bar Ranch. The ranch was once owned by actor John Wayne.
The official John Wayne posted the following about the ranch yesterday:
Happy Thanksgiving Pilgrim! We are thankful for you!
Duke is pictured with his 26 Bar Ranch partner, Louis Johnson. The 26 Bar Ranch was a big part of the Wayne family's life and is especially significant this time of year because they spent every Thanksgiving at the ranch for the annual cattle auction.
John Wayne and his partner, Louis Johnson, owned more than fourteen thousand acres in the Casa Grande area, where the Red River Feedlot and ranch headquarters were. They also grazed cattle each summer on leased government land in the area around Springerville and Eagar, Arizona. Their operation also included growing twelve thousand acres of cotton in nearby Stanfield, Arizona.
The John Wayne: An American Experience Museum & Supply in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, Texas, will be closed today in observance of Thanksgiving. We will resume normal operating hours tomorrow and will be open from 9am to 6pm.
Above, Franklin silver half dollars. Photo by Armand Vaquer.
For those who wish to diverse their investment portfolios, investing in precious metals is one commodity to invest in.
Gold is one and silver is another.
The question arises, since the economy is going through tough times, is this a good time to invest in silver? Currently, the COMEX spot price for silver is at $31.305/toz.
Moneyweek has posted an article to answer that question.
They begin it with:
Alongside bonds, one way of diversifying a portfolio away from equities is through commodities. Gold has enjoyed a strong year, but there are reasons why now could be a good time to invest in silver.
Silver prices have increased slightly over 19.9% in dollar terms over the past 12 months, and 20.3% in sterling terms. Silver lags gold during this period, but given that gold and silver prices have historically been compared in order to assess the investment appeal of either, this arguably strengthens the case for investing in silver.
More Republican women are buying guns, and Biden-Harris policies may be the reason.
Women are acquiring guns as they feel unsafe with the open border, crime and the instability of the economy.
Fox News reported:
More Republican women are becoming gun owners, a trend one Second Amendment advocate says is a "direct result of many Biden-Harris policies."
"Ultimately, we feel unsafe," Katie Pointer Baney told Fox News Digital. "When we see a very porous border, when we see rising violent crime, when there's general instability in the economy … And a firearm is one of the best tools out there in order to protect yourself and protect your family."
Baney is managing director of government affairs for Delta Defense and the U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), which provides education and training for millions of gun owners.
Gun ownership rates among American adults as a whole are holding steady at 31%, according to polling data released by Gallup last week. But there has been a slight decrease in men owning guns, offset by a 5% increase in the share of women who reported owning a firearm.
Years ago, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors banned gun shows on county property, i.e., the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds (or Fairplex) in Pomona. This effectively killed the Great Western Gun show, which was the biggest gun show in California.
This ban did not come without a fight as citizens (including myself) attended the Board of Supervisors meetings to oppose this ban. Liberals on the Board passed it.
Since then, the state of California has also banned gun shows on state property. The fight may be heading to the U.S. Supreme Court as it was asked to hear the challenge to the state law.
The Washington Times reported:
A group that organizes gun shows at county fairgrounds in California has asked the Supreme Court to hear a challenge against laws restricting the buying and selling of guns on state property.
One of the laws prohibits anyone to “contract for, author or ally the sale of any firearm or ammunition on the property or in the buildings that comprise the Del Mar Fairgrounds.” Another regulation does the same at the Orange County Fair and Event Center.
The state later expanded its legislation to cover all state-owned land.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the challengers, reasoning the law did not meaningfully burden their constitutional rights.
The pro-gun challengers, including the Second Amendment Foundation, argue that the laws intend to ban gun shows and infringe on the speech that takes place at the events.
If the pro-gun show people prevail in their fight against the state ban, it could conceivably end Los Angeles County's similar ban. We shall see.
Above, Trump following the Butler, Pennsylvania assassination attempt.
The Leftist nut-jobs are still out there and are making threats to President-elect Donald Trump, his transition team and appointees. These threats include bomb threats, assassination and swatting.
Thankfully, law enforcement has taken swift action and an arrest has been made.
Newsmax reported:
"Law enforcement and authorities acted quickly to ensure safety" of Trump transition team members and appointees after a spate of violent threats to them and their families, including "bomb threats and swatting" Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, a spokeswoman announced.
Also, another alleged would-be assassin from Arizona targeting President-elect Donald Trump was reportedly arrested Wednesday.
"Last night and this morning, several of President Trump's Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them," Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman of the Trump-Vance Transition and the designated next White House press secretary, wrote in a statement.
"These attacks ranged from bomb threats to 'swatting.' In response, law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted. President Trump and the entire Transition team are grateful for their swift action.
"President Trump and the Transition are focused on doing the work of uniting our nation by ensuring a safe and prosperous future. With President Trump as our example, dangerous acts of intimidation and violence will not deter us."
Among the reported targets thus far are former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., and U.S. Commerce Secretary-nominee Howard Lutnick.
Above, my Winchester 94 made in 1962. Photo by Armand Vaquer.
Regular readers of this blog know that I purchased a pre-1964 Winchester 94 in .30-30 Winchester. Before purchasing it in Albuquerque five years ago, I had been on a lookout for one for some time.
The rifle was in great shape and the price was right. It was a deal I couldn't refuse. It was built in 1962. I confirmed its age through its serial number at a Winchester serial number database while at the gun store.
It is fun to shoot. Although there are plenty of deer in my vicinity in New Mexico, I confine my shooting to target plinking at our community shooting area.
Gun Digest recently (three days ago) posted an article on the history of the Winchester 94 that is worth a read if one is even remotely interested in acquiring one. It even explains why the pre-1964 Winchester 94s are coveted by collectors and enthusiasts.
It begins with:
We take a closer look at the Winchester 94 lever-action, the most iconic American hunting rifle ever made.
In some hunting circles, it was once considered a rite of passage to be able to silently cock back the hammer of a lever-action rifle. More often than not, it was the hammer of a Winchester Model 1894, more commonly known as the Winchester 94.
With over 7.5 million made since the model’s introduction in 1894 the Winchester 94 is easily the most popular deer rifle ever produced, and there was a time when almost every American hunter had one in his gun rack, safe or hanging from the window of his truck. Compared to shotguns and bolt-actions, lever-action rifles aren’t as popular with hunters as they once were, but the Winchester Model 94 remains in production to this day and still holds the title of the single most iconic American hunting rifle of all time.

The World Cruise Awards Gala was held recently in Madeira, Portugal. The fourth annual event was attended by representatives from cruise lines.
As we are near the end of the year, the awards recognize "the best of" different cruise lines during the past year.
Yahoo! Life reported:
Many major cruise brands attended the fourth annual World Cruise Awards Gala Ceremony, hosted in Funchal, the capital city of Madeira in Portugal.
The results follow a year-long search for the world’s leading cruise brands. Votes were cast by cruise-industry professionals and the public, with the nominee receiving the most votes in a category named as the winner.
That's a unusual way to hand out awards: The weight of an industry member was five times that of a random cruiser.
The awards "had the privilege of recognizing cruise brands that are stellar examples of excellence in their field," World Cruise Awards Director Chris Frost said in a statement.
World Cruise Awards is the sister event of the World Travel Awards, which was launched in 1994 to celebrate excellence in global travel and tourism.
Norwegian Cruise Line was named "Best Cruise Line".
Now that we're almost at the end of the year, this appears to be the time when the cruise industry hands out awards for the "Best this" and "Best that".
Yahoo Life has posted the winners.
They begin with:
The holiday season is upon us, and you ponder how to maintain this seasonal cheer throughout the year. Suddenly, a light bulb sparks to life inside your mind. Yes, a cruise!
Visions of a cruise ship sailing toward a sunny island with pristine beaches confirm that this is indeed a brilliant idea. Now, which is the best cruise for you?
U.S. News & World Report recently released its 2025 Best Cruise Lines rankings. The timing is perfect, almost like a Christmas gift to you. It's okay to open this present early. After all, you have a cruise to plan.
While U.S. News ranks cruises across several categories, I want to focus on the top cruises for families and from a value perspective.
Above, this will be a thing of the past at the California RV Show if the Democrats have their way. Photo by Armand Vaquer.
Well, a website (besides here) has come out and said it: Democrats declare war on RVs.
Six blue states (you know, ones run by Democrats) have effectively banned the sale of new diesel and gasoline motorhome that don't comply with their new air emissions regulations.
Voz Media wrote:
Six states with Democratic leadership plan to follow California's lead by banning RV sales starting in 2025. The focus of the ban is on diesel-powered recreational vehicles, which serve as homes on wheels for over three million Americans.
The website RV Travel claims that the states of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington have taken steps to ban sales if these vehicles do not meet certain emissions requirements based on new environmental regulations.
These measures are based on California's initiative from October, when the California Air Resources Board (CARB) revised its Advanced Clean Truck (ACT) regulations. The updated rules aim to promote zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and mandate that all vehicles over 8,500 pounds meet zero-emission standards.
According to RV Travel, this regulation will require manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks and motorhomes, to increase their sales of zero-emission vehicles. As a result, they will gradually halt the production and supply of new internal combustion engine models.
While it was initially expected that regulations like California's would not apply to recreational vehicles, this has proven to be untrue. As a result, RVs and vans designed for livability are also affected by these measures.
The Blu-ray of Godzilla Minus One arrived in today's mail. I didn't expect it until Friday, but I'm not complaining.
It is a two-disc set with the movie in one disc and special features in the other.
I have watched some of the special features. The first one was the behind-the-scenes making of the movie. It was interesting to watch thanks to the director (our old friend Yoshikazu Ishii). Other features include: Commemorative Special Feature: Godzilla Minus One - No. 30, VFX Behind The Scenes, Event Video Collection, Tokyo International Film Festival Opening Red Carpet, Event Video Collection, Academy Awards Winner Additional Screening Trailer and Takashi Yamazaki Selection Talk Shows. Definitely lots of interesting stuff!
Hey, everyone who was concerned with a dictatorship, you’ll be interested in Newsom’s moves. He’s making whatever decisions he wants, with no CA voter input. He plans on slapping almost a dollar per gallon on our already sky-high gas prices, and he’s talking about restricting use… https://t.co/y1niwwxicn
The incoming Trump Administration will be doing a massive clean-up of the military from day one.
This includes removing transgender military service members. Finally, the freakshow will be coming to an end.
According to the Gateway Pundit:
President Trump will remove transgender servicemembers from the military by executive order on day one of his presidency.
“The ban is expected to be wider ranging than a similar order made during his first term in office, when Trump prevented transgender people joining the armed forces, but allowed those already serving to keep their jobs. President Biden rescinded the order, but this time even those with decades of service will be removed from their posts, according to several sources,” The Times reported.
Joe Biden and the Marxist left turned the US military into a woke social experiment as China promotes masculinity to their young males.
If one is from New Mexico and noticed that grocery bills are much higher, it is not your imagination. The truth is, grocery items are much higher than they were four years ago.
New Mexico ranks at number eight of the nation's highest grocery price states.
Piñon Post reported:
New Mexico has ranked as the eighth-highest state for grocery bills in the U.S., according to a Visual Capitalist analysis mapping how much Americans spend on groceries across all states. Despite New Mexico’s relatively low cost of living compared to more expensive states like California, residents still face elevated food costs, with households spending approximately $286 per week—or around $1,144 a month—on groceries.
Nationally, grocery prices have surged significantly, with costs for “food at home” rising by 20% since August 2020, marking the steepest inflation since the 1970s, as per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. American households spend about $270 weekly on groceries, translating to $1,080 monthly, based on data sourced from the Census Bureau. Yet, the burden of food costs varies significantly from state to state.

Cruise ship gratuities are something that is not very prominently stated on cruise line websites and brochures. But they are a factor to weigh in when choosing a cruise with a cruise line. One has to read the fine print.
Royal Caribbean has raised their gratuity rates as of November 1.
According to MSM:
Gratuities have always been a hot topic in the cruise industry. Royal Caribbean is increasing its automatic gratuities. Here is everything you need to know.
Starting November 1, 2024, the cruise line will increase its automatic gratuity rate by $0.50 per person per day. Previously, the gratuity amount was $20.50 per person per day for suite passengers and $18.00 per person per day for non-suite passengers, which includes inside staterooms, balcony staterooms, ocean view staterooms, and junior suites.
Following the increase, the gratuity for suite passengers will become $21.00 per person per day, while the gratuity for non-suite passengers will be raised to $18.50 per person per day. However, passengers who have already booked their cruises have the option to lock in the old gratuity rate by prepaying before November 1, 2024.
Here's something that should not be surprising, but it seems to be.
A recent Gallup poll survey (in October) found that more Republican women own firearms than do Democrat men.
EconoTimes reported:
A recent Gallup survey has revealed an intriguing demographic trend: Republican women are statistically more likely to own firearms than Democratic men. The findings, which have ignited a spirited national debate, underscore the cultural and ideological divides surrounding gun ownership in the United States.
Gun Ownership Trends by Gender and Party
The survey, conducted in October, examined firearm ownership across political and gender lines. According to Gallup, 43% of Republican women reported owning at least one firearm, compared to only 27% of Democratic men.
The stuff that now passes as "music", particularly rock 'n roll, leaves me cold. So, to start off the week, here's a video of a classic rock artist.
To start off this week, we have Walter Egan with his 1978 hit, "Magnet and Steel". One of the background vocalists in the recording was by Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks.
Walter Egan (born July 12, 1948) is an American rock musician, best known for his 1978 gold status hit single "Magnet and Steel" from his second album release, Not Shy, produced by Egan, Lindsey Buckingham and Richard Dashut. The song reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 on the Easy Listening chart. In Canada it reached #9. Overseas, it peaked at #32 on the Australian Singles Chart, Kent Music Report.

The Red Rock Balloon Rally is just two weeks away at Red Rock Park near Gallup.
I've attended twice. The first time was six years ago, but an overnight snowstorm prevented the ascension of the balloons. I camped next to the ascension area. The next year, the balloons had their ascensions. It was nice and sunny out, but the outside temperature was in the 20s. I was warmly dressed, but the cold air played havoc on my digital camera.

Japan continues to see record numbers of foreign tourists.
According to Travel and Tour World:
Japan experienced an all-time high of 3.31 million visitors last month, marking a new milestone in tourism. Fueled by the depreciated yen, this influx of travelers generated substantial income for the nation. Visitor numbers surpassed pre-pandemic records, as people eagerly explored Japan’s stunning autumn scenery. Tourist expenditures hit historic peaks, solidifying their role as a crucial driver of Japan’s economic growth.
Japan saw an unprecedented 3.31 million visitors last month, setting a new tourism milestone, according to official figures released Wednesday. The weak yen has fueled a tourism surge, channeling significant revenue into the country’s economy. This latest figure surpasses September’s 2.87 million visitors and breaks the previous monthly record of 3.29 million set in July, as reported by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).
By the end of October, nearly 30.2 million tourists had visited Japan this year, closing in on the all-time annual high of 31.9 million recorded in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global travel.

It seems that most websites that discuss the best states for winter snowbirds to go to by-pass New Mexico.
However, there are some places in the state that are suited for snowbirds. RV Life has posted an article on three of the best snowbird destinations. I've been to two of them.
They begin with:
New Mexico’s beautiful natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and mild winters makes it snowbird’s paradise. If you’re looking for an RV snowbird destination that lets you enjoy both outdoor activities and peaceful retreats without feeling too hot or too crowded, this southwestern state might be for you.
However, New Mexico hasn’t garnered a lot of attention as a destination for snowbirds. This is largely because its mountainous terrain tends to be cooler than Florida, Texas, or Southern California. With that being said, average daytime temperatures in January (southern New Mexico’s coldest month) hover in the mid 50s in most regions. Although this isn’t T-shirt weather, it’s still mild enough that there’s no need to retreat indoors because it’s too hot to do anything outside. And outside is where it’s at in New Mexico. In winter, you can enjoy a wealth of activities in the Southern region of this state. wealth of outdoor activities that include sight-seeing, hiking, golf, taking in art and culture, and a whole lot more.
By the way, New Mexico’s culture is rooted in its indigenous and Mexican heritages. As a result, the southern part of the state boasts a rich heritage that’s evident in its historical sites and unique art to check out. In addition, the Southern part of New Mexico boasts great restaurant and entertainment options.
Last night, I was walking out of Albertson's market in Gallup and saw a train passing by (about 200-300 yards away) with flatbed cars with tanks. There were two tanks per car and there were a lot of them. It was heading east.
I took some photos, but the train was moving too fast for a clear picture.
Above, The Custer fight (1903) by Charles Marion Russell.
One of my "bucket list" places to visit is the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana. I tried going there in 1985, but the tent trailer at the time got damaged during a windstorm in Sheridan, Wyoming and we had to change our route. Maybe I'll go there this coming year. I have been thinking about heading there, Cody and venturing east to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
The Little Bighorn Battlefield is where Col. George Armstrong Custer engaged in a battle that killed 268 7th cavalry soldiers, civilians, and Indian scouts along with an estimated 60-100 Lakota and Cheyenne.
The National Monument is breaking ground for a new visitor center.
From the National Park Service:
CROW AGENCY, Mont. – Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument recently awarded a construction contract to replace the park’s aging visitor center built in 1951. The National Park Service is coordinating with the park's associated Tribes and stakeholders to develop interpretive exhibits that better tell the complex stories surrounding the landscape, site, and people. Work is scheduled to begin on November 25, 2024.
The nearly $14 million project is funded by the Centennial Challenge program and donations through the National Park Foundation (NPF), including a lead grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
The new 9,000 square foot building will be constructed on the footprint of the old visitor center. Nomlaki Technologies LLC, based in West Sacramento, California, is a 100% tribally owned company of members of the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians. The new building will provide prominent views of the battlefield and will feature a roof deck, an improved parking area, accessible walkways, and enhanced visitor amenities to accommodate increased visitor use.
It looks like the Gallup Poll has a bias against guns as their poll taken before the election is skewed towards gun control.
It is getting so that practically every poll is not to be trusted anymore.
The New American reported:
A month before the November presidential election, Gallup conducted a poll on Second Amendment and firearm issues. Predictably, the group reported that most Americans (56 percent) want more gun-control laws.
A month later, voters went to the polls and voted into office pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment candidates. This included the reelection of Donald Trump with his pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment agenda.

During the cruise to Havana, Cuba, our ship stopped at Key West, Florida for the day.
While there, I went to the Shipwreck Museum, a cigar shop, a outdoor patio bar and Hemingway Home.
At Hemingway Home, I saw several descendants of author Ernest Hemingway's cats. Some of the cats have six toes. They wandered around the property and mingles with visitors. There's also a cat cemetery on the property.
Garden & Gun has posted an article on the cats.
It begins with:
When the Hemingway Home first opened its foliage-framed gates to the public sixty years ago, visitors got to enter the preserved Key West oasis that inspired one of America’s literary heroes. Today, the property looks much as it did when Ernest Hemingway lived there in the 1930s: typewriters are strewn about desks, vibrant mustard-colored art deco tiles line bathrooms, and of course, dozens upon dozens of six-toed cats roam. “We have fifty-nine cats at the moment, and about half of them have extra toes,” says Alexa Morgan, the director of public relations at the Hemingway Home and Museum.

City boondocking in an RV. That's one thing I've never tried.
Do It Yourself RV has posted an article with the dos and don't to city boondocking, including tips.
It begins with:
Boondocking is one of the best ways to save money while RVing. Typically, it’s associated with remote, scenic locations where you can escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. But did you know there’s also a way to boondock in urban areas?
City boondocking is a fantastic option for saving money while staying close to the amenities and attractions a city offers. It allows you to explore the sights and sounds of an urban area while remaining close to gyms with showers, dump stations, and plenty of dining options.
That said, city boondocking does come with its own set of challenges. These include ensuring you stay safe, avoiding noise, and of course, making sure you are boondocking legally. Want to give city boondocking a try but feel unsure about how to begin? Below, I’ll share all my tips and tricks!
Above, shopping in Freeport with our cruise ship in the background. Photo by Armand Vaquer.
When Mitch Geriminsky and I took the Bahamas cruise back in August, two of our stops were at Freeport and Nassau.
We didn't know it then, and we weren't advised by Norwegian Cruise Line during the cruise, but both Nassau and Freeport were under a State Department Level 2 travel advisory. This is due to some violent crimes from gang activity.
According to Yahoo!:
Both Nassau and Freeport are popular cruise destinations that are both under a travel advisory from the US Department of State. That has been the case since Jan. 26, 2024, but anyone visiting needs to be aware of exactly what the warning says in order to be safe if they decide to get off the ship in either destination.
A Level 2 warning is a little more serious and should be paid attention to, but it's not the US government telling you not to travel. In the case of The Bahamas, which is under a Level 2 travel advisory, you really have to read the warning.
"Exercise increased caution in The Bahamas due to crime," serves as essentially the headline for the Level 2 travel advisory which then gets much more specific.
"The majority of crime occurs on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands. In Nassau, practice increased vigilance in the 'Over the Hill' area (south of Shirley Street) where gang-on-gang violence has resulted in a high homicide rate primarily affecting the local population. Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence," the State Department shared.
Although in a Level 2 safety warning, we saw nothing that would give us concern while we were in Freeport or Nassau. It would have been nice if Norwegian Cruise Line told us about the travel advisory.
The stuff that now passes as "music", particularly rock 'n roll, leaves me cold. So, to start off the week, here's a video of a classic rock artist.
To start off the week, we have Grand Funk Railroad, a band that I saw in concert at The Forum on October 21, 1971. It was with the original line-up of Mark Farner (lead guitar), Don Brewer (drums) and Mel Schacher (bass). They were quite a popular band despite not being a critics' favorite. Grand Funk Railroad began as a trio in 1969.
Grand Funk Railroad (often shortened to Grand Funk) is an American rock band formed in Flint, Michigan, in 1969 by Mark Farner (vocals, guitar, keyboards, harmonica), Don Brewer (drums, vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass). The band achieved peak popularity and success during the 1970s with hit songs such as "We're an American Band", "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)", "Some Kind of Wonderful" (a cover of Soul Brothers Six), "Walk Like a Man", "The Loco-Motion" (a cover of Little Eva), "Bad Time" and "Inside Looking Out" (a cover of the Animals). Grand Funk released six platinum and seven gold-certified albums between their recording debut in 1969 and their first disbandment in 1976.
Known for a crowd-pleasing arena rock style, the band toured extensively and played to packed arenas worldwide, and was well-regarded by audiences despite a relative lack of critical praise. The original trio reunited at various times later into the band's career; after Farner's final departure in 1998, Brewer and Schacher have continued touring as Grand Funk Railroad.
For this week's entry, we have two videos.
The first is a live 1969 concert version of "Inside Looking Out":
The second is the studio version of "T.N.U.C." (spell it backwards):

While booking our August cruise to the Bahamas earlier this year, Mitch Geriminsky and I also looked into what was being offered in shore excursions at the different ports-of-call.
We chose two. One was boat and bus tours of Nassau. The other was for jet skiing at Great Stirrup Cay, a private island owned by our cruise line, Norwegian Cruse Line. Other shore excursions were offered such as swimming with pigs, dolphin swim or sitting on the beach, all of which weren't appealing to either of us. We enjoyed the excursions that we picked.
AOL has posted an article with 5 tips for booking the best cruise excursions.
It begins with:
You’ve booked your cruise, selecting the perfect destination, dates, cruise line and cabin. Now the fun begins – deciding how you’ll spend your time in each port of call. Shore excursions can range from walking tours to cultural activities to exhilarating adventures to relaxing beach days, and so much more, depending on where you’re cruising. With all of the options, it can be a bit overwhelming, to say the least. We checked with Gary Bembridge for advice on booking the best cruise shore excursions, regardless of where you’re sailing.

A winter weather advisory will take effect this afternoon as a winter storm is moving into New Mexico.
According to the Country Herald (based in Illinois, of all places):
Santa Fe, NM – A winter weather advisory will take effect Sunday afternoon, bringing snow to New Mexico’s higher elevations.
The advisory, valid from noon Sunday through 8 a.m. Monday, predicts 3 to 5 inches of snow above 7,500 feet. According to the National Weather Service, impacted areas include the Gila Region Highlands, Black Range, and Sacramento Mountains.
Officials warn of icy, snow-packed roads that could make driving hazardous. They encourage motorists to use caution and prepare for changing weather conditions. The advisory urges residents to monitor updated forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
