Silver Around $62

The above screenshot of today's COMEX silver spot price was made a few minutes ago.

Personally, I am not at all concerned if silver should dip down even further. To me, that means that the metal will be more affordable to collectors/investors. Should silver go down into the $40 range, I will likely start buying again.

According to LiveMint.com:

Gold and silver prices traded with mild gains on Monday, 6 July, extending last week's sharp recovery as easing concerns over an imminent US Federal Reserve rate hike and a weaker US dollar provided much-needed support to precious metals, which had remained under pressure in recent weeks.

COMEX gold futures climbed $90 per troy ounce to an intraday high of $4,215, while silver futures advanced $2.73 per troy ounce to $63.73.

Spot Prices Decline, Create Buying Opportunities

The spot price of silver has gone down a bit in recent days.

It has gone much lower than the record highs of the beginning of the year. The spot price has slid to around $67/toz. If one bought over the higher spot price at the beginning of the year, just hang on to your silver.

However, since the spot price is much lower now, it could be a great opportunity to buy more.

According to Numismatic News:

The spot price of gold and silver has not made many headlines recently, but they have been slowly declining from their record values several months earlier. If you are interested in coins composed of either of these metals as a long-term investment or for a coin collection you are unlikely to resell. This price decline is of little consequence to you. It may even be a buying opportunity.

Metal Prices May Lead To Melting of Common Silver Coins

Above, a 2022 American Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Currently, the silver spot price per troy ounce at Comex is around $82.00.

With silver garnering such high prices (it was over $100 last month), the possibility of silver coins being melted for industrial uses is looming.

Numismatic News posted an article taking a look at how metal prices may lead to melting of common silver coins.

They begin with:

For the last few decades, silver stackers and gold bugs have been preaching the imminent breakout of their respective metals, suggesting that gold could top $2,000, then $2,500, and so on, for an ounce. Those who took a shine to silver have suggested that $50 and even $100 an ounce was possible. A select few have even proclaimed higher benchmarks. For all the times those passionate defenders wound up crying wolf, but now the wolves are at the door.

But the effect this has on world coin pricing, aside from pushing the underlying base value higher, remains unclear. The high prices may already have priced some collectors out of the market. And some folks are cashing in their newfound wealth by sending common coins to be melted, though they aren’t reaping the full rewards of the increased melt value. The only thing slowing down the mass melting of common world coins is the massive backlog at refineries. The demand that started in the fall, as silver breached the $50 high-water marks of 2011 and 1979–1980, has not abated.

Can You Buy Silver Bars and Coins From A Bank?

Above, a 2023 American silver eagle proof set. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

With silver now at $119/troy ounce at Comex, it is tempting people to sell. However, there are those who still want to buy silver.

A question arises: Can you buy silver bars and coins from a bank?

CBS News posted an article answering that question.

They begin it with:

With inflation pressures still impacting purchasing power and economic uncertainty prompting investors to reassess their portfolios, precious metals have resurged as a popular hedge strategy. And, while gold has been having a moment over the past year, silver prices have climbed notably in tandem, outpacing gold's upward trajectory and attracting both seasoned investors and newcomers looking to diversify beyond traditional stocks and bonds. For many investors exploring this asset class, a seemingly logical first stop would be their local bank branch.

But the process of acquiring physical silver isn't quite as straightforward as withdrawing cash from your bank account or opening a certificate of deposit (CD). While banks serve as trusted financial intermediaries for countless transactions, their role in the precious metals market tends to differ. That can come as a surprise to investors who are expecting to walk into their banking institution and purchase silver bars alongside their routine banking services. So, before you head to your bank, it's worth knowing whether you can actually buy physical silver this way.

How Much Can I Sell My 1-Ounce of Silver Now?

Above, silver Britannia coins. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

A few minutes ago, I took a look at the current spot price of silver. At Comex, it sits at $114 per troy once.

Many of use had purchased silver over the years when the price was low. It is now tempting to sell at the current spot price. The question is: can you?

CBS News posted an article on how much can one sell their one ounce of silver.

The article starts with:

Silver has been on a remarkable run recently, with prices climbing dramatically over the past year as investors seek out safe-haven assets amid economic uncertainty. The precious metal has outpaced gold on its uphill ascent and has even surpassed many traditional investments, drawing attention from both longtime precious metal enthusiasts and newcomers looking to capitalize on the rally. This surge has pushed silver to record-high price levels, creating a compelling environment for anyone holding physical silver.

The recent price trajectory also reflects broader market dynamics, including persistent inflation concerns, geopolitical tensions and growing industrial demand, all of which have contributed to silver's strength. Unlike gold, which primarily serves as a store of value, silver's dual role as both an investment and an industrial commodity has amplified its price movements. And, as economic uncertainty continues to drive investors toward tangible assets, silver has emerged as an increasingly attractive option for portfolio diversification.

And, if you purchased silver coins months or years ago, this rally represents a significant gain on paper. But if you're holding a 1-ounce silver coin you want to sell, it's important to know that what you'll receive won't be equal to today's spot price. Numerous elements determine the real cash value you'll walk away with. So, how much can you sell a 1-ounce coin for right now? That's what we'll outline below.

Is It Too Late To Invest In Silver?

Above, Morgan and Peace silver dollars. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Over the past few years, I invested heavily in silver coins and bullion. That was when the price of silver was low (under $40 per troy ounce).

Today, silver is at $95/toz at Comex. This is great for those of us who have accumulated silver while the price was low. Remember the old addage: "Buy low, sell high!"

CBS News asks, "Is it too late to invest in silver?"

They begin with:

Silver has had tremendous growth over the last year. The precious metal's price has jumped by approximately 200% in just the last year, and now sits at nearly $100 per ounce — a number virtually unheard of.

For many investors, the run-up poses quite the conundrum, however. On the one hand, the price jumps mean the possibility of big returns. On the other hand, they also signal more risk — and more loss should the market reverse course.

So what do experts think? Is there still upside to buying silver, or is the risk too great with this precious metal right now? Below, we'll break down what you need to know before getting started.

US Retail Investors Appear To Be Selling Silver

Above, Franklin silver half dollars. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

With silver's spot price recent big rise (it is currently around $88 per troy ounce at COMEX), people are selling rather than buying.

This is understandable. But should one sell now? One expert says if a person needs the money, go ahead and sell. But if people don't need the money, just hold on to it.

MSN posted an article on the recent spikes in silver's spot price.

They begin it with:

When silver prices spiked tenfold in the 1970s to more than $50 an ounce, many Americans correctly saw an opportunity and lined up at precious metals dealers to sell their old sterling silver. That proved smart since silver prices proceeded to collapse to under $10 an ounce in the 1980s.

Similar behavior may be occurring during the current silver boom, which has led to a tripling in silver prices to over $90 an ounce over the past year. That includes a nearly 30% gain so far in 2026 as new price records have been set.

It isn’t easy to generalize, but two coin dealers tell Barron’s that retail investors are heavier sellers than buyers, and it appears the outsize silver gains are being driven by institutional investors and overseas buyers in regions such as Asia.

A few minutes ago, I took a gander at the current spot price of silver at Comex. Well, to say the least, it was hovering around an astounding $75/toz. It opened today at $80/toz.

Silver Price Soars To Record Level

Silver has soared to record levels at week's end. How much higher it may go is anyone's guess.

Right now, it is around $57/toz at Comex.

According to Mining.com:

Silver soared to an all-time high on Friday following an outage on the Comex due to what the exchange operator CME calls a “cooling system failure”.

Spot prices rose 4% to a new record of $55.66 per oz., surpassing its peak set last month during a historic squeeze in the London market. Three-month futures also jumped 5%, trading within a similar range.

Silver Sets New Record At $53/toz.

Above, a 1923 Peace Silver Dollar. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Silver and gold hit new highs in trading on Wednesday.

According to BullionVault:

GOLD JUMPED and silver prices leapt on Wednesday, slashing the 'safe haven' precious metal's value relative to its more industrially-useful cousin to the lowest in a month as the Federal Reserve signalled it's about to re-start buying bonds to ensure "ample" liquidity while global stock markets rose ahead of US politicians voting to end the record-long shutdown of US government services.

US stock markets opened higher and European bourses hit new all-time records as gold priced in Dollars rallied from $4100 per Troy ounce to hit a new 3-week high at $4180 − a fresh record gold high only a month ago − after New York Fed chief John Williams said it will soon be time "to begin the process of gradual purchases of assets [to] maintain an ample level of reserves" to meet commercial bank demand for liquidity.

With Trump appointee (and White House economist) Stephen Miran also due to speak Wednesday, 'neutral' Fed member Raphael Bostic meantime announced that he will stand down from the Atlanta Federal Reserve at the end of his current term in February, opening another monetary policy spot to nominations from the Trump White House.

Silver had already shot higher, rising above $52 per Troy ounce − also a new all-time high when first reached this time last month − before breaking $53 to trade 9.8% above last weekend's level.

Why Silver Has Been Surging More Than Gold

Silver is now over $51 per troy ounce at COMEX.

This may be a new spot price record for the precious metal.

Why is this happening? MSN posted an article on the reasons why silver has become a hot item.

Then begin with:

(Bloomberg) -- Gold has staged a dramatic rally this year as Russia’s war in Ukraine and the US Trump administration’s unorthodox economic policies sent investors and central banks reaching for safe-haven assets. Right now, however, it’s silver that’s stealing the spotlight.

A squeeze in supply of the precious metal has catapulted it to a 70% gain on the London market this year, compared with a 55% increase for gold as of mid-October. Both have been experiencing a surge in demand from investors, who value their price stability through periods of political turbulence, inflation and currency weakness.

Unlike gold, silver isn’t just scarce and beautiful: It also has useful real-world properties that make it a valuable component in a range of products. With inventories at their lowest in years and investors still scrambling for more, there’s a risk of supply shortages that could impact multiple industries.

Silver Over $50/toz.

Silver is now over $50/toz. in COMEX spot price. Where it goes from here is anyone's guess.

It did briefly go over $51 yesterday.

According to Kitco:

(Kitco News) - Gold and silver prices are sharply higher in early U.S. trading Monday, with gold hitting another record high and silver very near its record high set in 1980. Safe-haven demand as the U.S. government remains shut down and a short squeeze in silver are keeping bulls confident and bears unwilling to step in front of a steaming locomotive. The recent bigger daily price moves in gold and silver markets suggest volatility will remain high in the near term. December gold was last up $95.20 at $4,095.80. December silver prices were up $2.398 at $49.63.

Spot silver prices overnight hit the highest level in decades as a historic short squeeze in London intensified, “with a fresh surge in prices adding urgency to a worldwide hunt for bullion that could alleviate the mismatch between demand and supply,” reported Bloomberg. Spot silver climbed as much as 3.1% to near $52.00 an ounce, exceeding last week’s peak, while spot gold surpassed $4,070.00 an ounce to a record high.

Silver: XAG/USD Trades Firmly Above $47

Above, an 1883-O Morgan dollar. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Silver is going gangbusters this week. It is nearing the fifty-dollar mark in spot price.

It is currently at $47.505/toz at COMEX.

According to FXStreet:

Silver price (XAG/USD) holds onto gains near the all-time high around $47.80 during the Asian trading session on Thursday. The white metal posted a fresh all-time high on Wednesday as funding to the United States (US) government stopped after the short-term funding bill failed to achieve a majority in the House of Senate on Tuesday.

The US government shutdown has increased the appeal of safe-haven assets, such as Silver.

US Vice President (VP) JD Vance has warned that the White House would need to resort to lay-offs if the shutdown remains for more than a few days, Reuters reported.

Even With The Recent Price Surge, Silver Still Appears Cheap

Currently, silver's COMEX spot price is just over $41.00/toz. This is great for those of us who invested in the metal during recent years when it was in the $20s.

Here's the current COMEX spot price:

For those who are curious about silver investing, an article by Mike Maharrey in Seeking Alpha is an interesting read.

It begins with:

Silver is up an impressive 39.7 percent so far this year, hitting the highest level since 2011. It has broken through the significant $40 per ounce resistance and appears to be on track for a new record high over $50.

Yet, even with this bullish action, silver is still underpriced compared to gold.

As of the morning of September 9, the gold-silver ratio was still over 88-1. This indicates that silver remains a bargain compared to gold.
