There's a bit of a competition, of sorts, between the Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower. One or the other (or both) are considered to be the "symbol" of Tokyo.

Tokyo Tower has been a symbol of Japan since it began overlooking Tokyo 60 years ago in 1958. In 2012 a new symbol of Japan took form with the completion of Tokyo Skytree. Tokyo Tower has one distinction that the Tokyo Skytree doesn't have (at least, so far): it has appeared in numerous kaiju movies from different studios. It first appeared in Mothra (1961) by Toho Co., Ltd.
