Big Texan Roadshow In Gallup

Above, the giant steer in front of the McKinley County Courthouse. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Last evening, I headed into Gallup to check out the Big Texan Roadshow that is in celebration of the centennial of Route 66.

The event was held in the McKinley County Courthouse Square. There were about 100 people there. By the time I left, there were at least 300.

The Big Texan out of Amarillo, Texas is celebrating Route 66's centennial in different cities along the "Mother Road". They will be in Albuquerque tomorrow.

I don't know how many people signed up for the free 72 oz. steak challenge. It was getting too crowded and I was getting a bit hungry. So I left and went to Jerry's Cafe for dinner. I decided to try our their tostada and beef enchilada plate. Not bad! I will have my usual there tomorrow.

Above, my dinner at Jerry's Cafe. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

The Big Texan had the mayor of Gallup there to welcome the attendees and they had a booth of Big Texan souvenirs for sale. Local Native American artisans also had booths of jewelry and other goods for sale.

It was a great turnout, considering what a small town of Gallup is.

Yesterday In Gallup

Above, yesterday at Gallup Coffee. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Yesterday afternoon was spent in Gallup.

I drove friend Larry Lucier to his doctor appointment in his bus. After dropping him off at the clinic, I headed into downtown Gallup to go to the Gallup Coffee shop.

While there, I enjoyed a hot mocha latte and a blueberry muffin. Both were good.

I recently read an article on wild blueberries on their health benefits. I've always known that they contain great cancer fighting antioxidants, but there are other health benefits as well. Plus, I just happen to like them.

According to an article in the Penobscot Bay Pilot:

ORONO — Wild blueberries, the iconic Maine crop dotting hillsides, decorating sweatshirts and adding personality to local menus, are more than a cultural symbol. Over 20 years of preclinical and clinical studies suggest that regularly consuming wild blueberries supports gut and heart health and may reduce risk factors associated with chronic disease.

Dorothy Klimis-Zacas, professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Maine, recommends one half to one cup per day. She eats them alongside her morning oats or blends them into smoothies.

She has spent her multi-decade career researching the health benefits of wild blueberries in relation to cardiometabolic health. Her work is featured in a comprehensive review from a Cardiometabolic Health Symposium of experts hosted by the Wild Blueberry Association of North America in Bar Harbor in 2025. Twelve experts — including Klimis-Zacas — participated, their work spanning the fields of nutrition, food science, dietetics, nutrition metabolism and physiology, cardiovascular and cognitive function, gut health and microbiology.

Blueberries contain polyphenols, which are bioactive compounds found in many berries, that have particularly powerful effects on vascular health. When compared to conventional blueberries, wild blueberries have twice the antioxidant content, 72% more fiber and 33% more anthocyanins — flavonoids related to the widespread health benefits of the berries, such as improved cardiometabolic health.

Research led by Klimis-Zacas was the first to show that wild blueberries reduce inflammation and vascular dysfunction by targeting the endothelium, the thin layer of cells lining blood vessels that regulates their contraction and relaxation. In preclinical studies, her team found that animals with hypertension and obesity showed reduced inflammation and improved vascular health after consuming wild blueberries for six weeks.

Further analysis revealed that a wild blueberry diet alters vascular structure via glycoproteins — key molecules involved in endothelial signaling processes. These structural changes not only improved endothelial function, but also made the endothelium more resilient to high blood lipids and high blood pressure changes.

“If your endothelium becomes dysfunctional, then everything starts going downhill,” Klimis-Zacas said.

Her lab has also investigated how wild blueberries influence local and systemic inflammation in metabolic syndrome, as well as glucose, lipid metabolism and gut health, to have a greater understanding of blueberries’ potential role in supporting overall metabolic function.

After Larry was done at the doctor's office, we headed to Jerry's Cafe for dinner.

Heat Wave In New Mexico

Above, yours truly enjoying Jerry's Cafe's air conditioning Friday.

Yesterday, the thermometer in Jamestown, New Mexico reached a high of approximately 81°. This was a far cry from the cold temperatures we were getting the the past several months.

Jamestown wasn't the only place in New Mexico who saw high temperatures.

The Albuquerque Journal reported:

Spring sprang like summer on Friday as heat records were shattered in many parts of New Mexico.

But while some people found ways to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather, state officials are on high alert for heat-related illness among vulnerable populations, elevated wildfire risk in tinder-dry forests and a lack of spring runoff amid record-low snowpack.

Clay Anderson, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said the state’s largest city already broke its heat record for the month of March on Thursday with a high of 88 degrees, eclipsing a previous record of 85 degrees, recorded in both 1907 and 1971.

That bar rose again on Friday, to 89 degrees, and is expected to hit 90 Saturday in Albuquerque — which would make it the earliest 90 degree-day recorded in the city. The last such record was set in 1947, when Albuquerque hit 90 on May 3.

Anderson said temperatures in several other areas of the state will also reach record highs in coming days.

"EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert" Review

Yesterday, I went to the Red Rock 10 Theaters in Gallup to see the new Baz Luhrmann EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert movie. It is a documentary/concert film. Afterwards, I went to Jerry's Café for dinner before heading home.

The movie focused Presley's early residency at the International Hotel in Las Vegas (circa 1969) and some arena concerts circa 1971-1972.

Reviews of the movie have been raving and, quite frankly, it didn't disappoint. The only narration was by Presley himself and not any talking heads of commentators.

Much of the footage I had never seen before. The sharpness and color were great, as if the footage was shot only recently. What really impressed me was the sound. The theater had a great surround system and make one almost feel as if they were in the showroom.

I was thinking during the movie that it was too bad my mother wasn't alive to enjoy it. She was the big Elvis fan in the family.

I have to give this movie a strong A+ grade.

The Weather Outlook

Above, having some coffee before "Uncle Bob" arrived.

Yesterday morning, we had a "squall" of snow come through. For about an hour or two we had something close to blizzard and whiteout conditions.

But, fortunately, it moved out of the area so that plenty of time for thawing out took place. This allowed me to head into Gallup for my usual Friday dinner at Jerry's Café.

The streets of Gallup were clear of any ice and snow. There were piles of it at different businesses after it was shoved.

At first, the restaurant was about two thirds full, so I was able to get a table for myself and "Uncle Bob" as soon as I walked in. Then the restaurant got packed.

Looking out this morning, there was no new snow on the ground. This was the first in three days that we didn't get overnight snow.

The upcoming week will be a warmer one, almost spring-like, with highs reaching into the 60s. That's according to the National Weather Service.

Snowing Again

Above, this morning's snow (so far). Photo by Armand Vaquer.

When getting my morning coffee today, I took a look outside and, sure enough, it is snowing.

This storm, on top of what we received yesterday, will accumulate to probably around 2 to 3 inches deep. It isn't what is received in the midwest or the northern eastern seaboard, but it is welcome.

According to the McKinley County Office of Emergency Management a few minutes ago:

Blustery Pacific cold front to cross W central, NW, and N central NM this morning with moderate snow squall: wind gusts up to 45 mph, visibilities around 1/4-1/2 mile, and ~1" of snow in about 1 hr. It will be cold enough for the snow to stick making driving hazardous.

I had to go to the post office yesterday in Continental Divide. It was a windy drive and a trucker ahead of me was swerving around. Thankfully, the driver got the tractor and trailer under control. Still, a lot of them are driving to fast for road conditions.

Hopefully, the wind and snow will taper off by this afternoon so that I can go into Gallup this evening for my Friday dinner at Jerry's Cafe.

Happy Valentine's Day, Etc.

First of all, Happy Valentine's Day!

Yesterday (Friday the 13th, by the way), we had steady light rain for most of the day. This will be a big help to the plants and trees.

It did snow a little bit after I got home from Gallup where I had dinner at Jerry's Café. But it was too warm out to last and it melted as soon as it hit the ground. Still, we are happy to get the rain. It rained all the way to and from Gallup. We got a good soak.

We aren't forecast for any real precipitation today, the next chance for rain/snow will start Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Above, Jerry's Café in Gallup. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

It looks like we may be getting some rain and snow showers this afternoon.

We sure as heck can use the precipitation.

According to the National Weather Service for the Gallup, New Mexico area:

Overnight
Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. South wind around 5 mph.
Friday
Rain showers before 4pm, then rain, possibly mixed with snow showers. Some thunder is also possible. High near 48. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Birthday Breakfast

Above, Jerry's Cafe's chile relleno con huevos. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Another birthday has come and gone.

I didn't do anything special, except going to Jerry's Cafe in Gallup for breakfast after getting a haircut.

Above, yesterday at Jerry's cafe.

The plate I ordered was the Chile Relleno con huevos. The plate consisted of a chile relleno, eggs, hash browns and refried beans. I didn't think I would be able to finish it all, but I did.

For the rest of the day, I just stayed at home and relaxed.

Icy Roads = Staying Put

Above, my street is all iced up. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

The current temperature outside is around 21°.

Last night's storm left about an inch snow, but it also has us in below freezing temperatures. The forecast high today in Jamestown is 28°.

The roads in the community are icy. They are too treacherous to attempt any driving. There may be patches of black ice on Interstate 40.

Above, another view of my street. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

I was planning on going to the post office at Continental Divide to pick up my mail and a package. I was also planning on going into Gallup for my usual Friday dinner at Jerry's Cafe. Unless the roads here thaw out, I am staying put at home.

It was a good thing that I did my grocery shopping last Sunday. I have plenty of food at home.

The Last Supper... of 2025

Above, outside of Jerry's Cafe last evening. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

One benefit to living in a rural community and near a small town is that it is much easier to have a restaurant dinner on New Years Eve.

I remember how difficult it is to go out to dinner on New Years Eve in Los Angeles. Restaurants at that time would have long waits for tables.

Above, the last supper of 2025. My usual enchilada and chile relleno. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

I had to wait about ten minutes for a table at Jerry's Cafe in Gallup last evening. It was no worse than a Friday night crowd. After being seated and had been there for awhile, I noticed several empty tables.

I don't know what today's outlook is for restaurant dining. I am planning to eat at home tonight.

Gallup Errand Done

Above, yesterday's breakfast. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

With Tuesday's traffic jam due to a semi truck accident at Coolidge, I delayed my errands to yesterday.

I decided to try out the breakfast menu at Jerry's Café in Gallup. I tried the Chile Relleno con Huevos. As usual, the chile relleno was good as was the rest of it (hash browns, scrambled eggs and beans). This was the first time I went there for breakfast. It was busy when I got there and it took about 15 minutes to be seated.

Above, Jerry's breakfast menu. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Afterwards, I headed over to Home Depot to pick up some trash bags. I bought a 200-count box. That should last for about a year.

From there, I headed to the market to pick up some wine for tonight's dinner at the Lucier's and some other groceries. (I bought some pinot noir, chardonnay and a riesling.)

Above, the Robert Mondavi pinot noir (2023) I bought yesterday. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

After unloading the car once I got home, I then headed to the post office in Continental Divide to pick up my mail.

That was enough running around for one day.

Russell Azbill, R.I.P.

Above, Russell and I at Jerry's Cafe in Gallup last year.

Our Jamestown, New Mexico group received some sad news yesterday. One of our friends, Russell Azbill, was found deceased near his home's front porch. He either died yesterday morning or yesterday night.

He may have been heading to his main outer gate to retrieve a package when stricken and was turning back to go back into the house when he fell.

Another friend, who was to take him to a doctor appointment was trying to reach him by phone. He went to Russell's home where he found his body on the ground just inside an inner gate at the house.

Above, Russell and the Jamestown group at Grandpa's Grill September 6.

We last saw Russell on Tuesday at our regular coffee gathering at Denny's at the Flying J. He was in good spirits and said he was feeling pretty good. He had several medical issues and had a heart attack a few months ago, which he seemed to have recovered from.

Russell was a writer, a racecar enthusiast and interested in UFOs, Bigfoot and other paranormal topics. He and I regularly swapped UFO and Bigfoot stories on Messenger. He last sent me a text on Messenger October 6 on Funny Car Acronyms. He has one published book, Darkest Hour. He was working on another book at the time of his death.

He is survived by two brothers and his dogs, Watson and Derek. He will be missed.

In Gallup Yesterday

Above, the chile relleno lunch at Gordo's Cafe. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

The majority of the time spent yesterday was in Gallup.

I went to USA RV Park to use their dump station to empty the motorhome's holding tanks in preparation to winterizing it.

I then set an appointment for 2:00 to get an affidavit notarized for my ex-roommate Jessica. As I had a couple of hours to kill, I decided to have lunch.

Above, about to put the RV in its garage a few winters ago. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

First, I went by Jerry's Cafe, but they were busy with a lunchtime crowd. Then, I headed over to Genaro's, but they were temporarily closed for cleaning. So, I ended up having lunch at Gordo's Cafe. I hadn't been there since 2018 when I stopped in for lunch when I was in town to finalize the purchase of my house in Jamestown. I had a cheeseburger then.

This time, I had a chili relleno. I like to try the rellenos in different restaurants to see how good, or not-so-good, they are. It wasn't bad.

After lunch, I headed to the UPS Store for my notary appointment and mailing of the affidavit.

Once that was done, I headed back home. Today, I will be winterizing the motorhome and put it in its garage.

Rainbow

After getting home from dinner at Jerry's Café in Gallup, I flipped on the television to watch the news.

While watching the news, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted this rainbow through the window. I grabbed my phone and took the above photo from my front porch.

It had been a dry monsoon season until about three weeks ago. Now we're getting the badly needed rain.

Snow In Gallup

Above, it was still snowing after I left Jerry's Cafe in Gallup. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

It was questionable that I would be going down to Jerry's Cafe in Gallup this evening given the weather. But it looked okay to go, so I did.

When I arrived, the snow did also. It was too warm for it to stick on the ground.

A couple of minutes after I arrived, friend Bob Weeks arrived and we were immediately seated. I was facing the front windows and the snow came down harder. Soon the windows were completely fogged.

Above, the Mustang after dinner. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

After dinner, the snow was still falling, but didn't stick to the ground. But it did cover my Mustang. I was debating whether to take Interstate 40 or Route 66 home. I opted for Interstate 40.

It snowed for most of the drive home until I got to Iyanbito exit. Then it turned into light rain.

I made it home with no problems.

T.C.B.

Above, the motorhome at the clampout in Quartzsite last weekend. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Today was a busy day.

After our Tuesday coffee/breakfast at Denny's down at the Flying J this morning, I headed into Gallup to do a few things.

First, I went and got myself a haircut. I was a bit overdue for one and was looking a bit unshorn. When I arrived, my barber noticed my motorhome and he expressed interest in getting one when he retires. He's now 64 and figures retiring in about four years from now.

After the haircut, I headed to a coin-operated car wash to wash the motorhome. It needed it as much as I needed the haircut.

Once that was completed, I went 16 miles to the west of Gallup and back into Arizona. I went to the Tee Pee Trading Post in Luption, Arizona (right on the border) to pick up a few Oliva cigars.

After that, I headed back into Gallup to have dinner at Jerry's Café. I had my usual No. 3 (enchilada and chile relleno combo).

After dinner, before heading home, I made a quick stop at Albertson's to pick up a few items.

The day went by quickly while T.C.B. (Taking Care of Business).

Friday Was Warm Enough To Enjoy

Above, yesterday at the Luciers up on Birch Road. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

It was around 60° yesterday in Jamestown.

This is unseasonably warm for this time of year. That is, if one wants to call 60° "warm". Still, it was comfortable enough to do some Jeep driving around the subdivision in the early afternoon.

I went into Gallup in the late afternoon for my usual Friday dinner at Jerry's Café.

The temperature will be dropping down to 50° today and it will be getting even colder during the week.

"McLintock" Poster Framed

Before going to dinner at Jerry's Café in Gallup last evening, I stopped at the frame shop to pick up the John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara McLintock (1963) poster.

I bought the poster at the John Wayne Birthplace Museum in October in Winterset, Iowa.

I think the framing work came out nicely.

Last Evening At Jerry's Cafe

Above, Russ and I at Jerry's Cafe in Gallup.

Last evening, one of my Jamestown friends, Russ Azbill, and I went to dinner at Jerry's Cafe in Gallup. He had never eaten there before.

I had earlier called him to ask him if he had a .38 Special/.357 Magnum pistol as I had some snake shot rounds in those calibers to give him. A few days ago, his dog Derek got bit on the tongue by a rattlesnake. Russ only had .22 caliber snake shot. The dog is at the vet's in Milan and should be coming home Monday (if they're open). He seems to be improving.

As we were talking, I mentioned I was going to Jerry's Cafe that evening and asked if he'd like to come along and I would give him the rounds then. He did and we went.

He liked Jerry's. I told him that Genaro's and Jerry's are my two favorite restaurants in Gallup.

UPDATE:

The vet called Russ this morning and Derek is being released today.
