A few months ago, I had a strongbox opened by a locksmith as the key had been lost and it hadn't been opened for over 20 years. I had it sitting in my closet during those years and had no idea what was inside.
Once opened, I found a treasure trove of coins. Along with silver dollars, there were many Franklin and Kennedy silver half dollars loose in the strongbox. There was also a small container containing about 20 1964 Kennedy silver half dollars.
Due to the silver content of these half dollars, they are more valuable than their face value.
Microsoft Start has posted an article on 7 most valuable half dollars and how to spot them.
They begin it with:
If you're like most of us, a 50-cent piece sure did seem like a treasure when you were a kid. Turns out, that half dollar might actually be worth a lot. Some of the most valuable half dollars sell for thousands or even millions of dollars to collectors who prize them.
Even beyond their face value, many half dollar coins actually contain real silver. This gives them intrinsic value, even if they are worn or have seen heavy circulation. Knowing what to look for can help you spot the most valuable half dollars in your pocket change or coin bank.
