No "Shin Godzilla" Sequel Until After 2020

A sequel to Toho's Shin Godzilla won't be produced until after 2020, according to Comicbook.com.

It is strange that this is being reported only now when co-director Shinji Higuchi stated as such at last summer's G-FEST. G-FEST is held every July in the Chicago area.

Did you enjoy Toho's new take on Godzilla in Shin Godzilla? Too bad it won't get a follow-up for a few years. 

Speaking at a Q&A during G-Fest XXIV, Shin Godzilla co-director Shinji Higuchi detailed the Godzilla rights deal Toho had made with Legendary Pictures. It turns out the multi-year partnership with Legendary allows the Western film company to make Godzilla films like 2014's Godzilla, and the upcoming sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters but not leaving room for much else. 

With Legendary planning to produce an eventual crossover with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. King Kong in 2020, Toho actually can't make another Godzilla film until after 2020. Meaning that any hope for a quick turn around on a Shin Godzilla has been dashed.

Godzilla vs. Kong Director Selected

Legendary Pictures is steadily getting the crew on board for production of the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie.

AL.com announced:

Alabama's talent pool Hollywood continues to shine bright thanks to director and Birmingham native Adam Wingard, who just landed the biggest project of his career. 

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Wingard, a go-to horror director on projects like "Blair Witch" and this year's "Death Note," will direct the announced Godzilla vs. King Kong movie for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, following up 2014's "Godzilla" and 2017's "Kong: Skull Island." 

The film is scheduled to open in theaters May 22, 2020. 

The writer of the article is forgot to mention the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters that will tie in with the G v K movie.

Legendary CEO Thomas Tull On "Godzilla vs. King Kong"

Variety has posted an article on what motivates Thomas Tull to want to produce Godzilla vs. King Kong.

Their article begins with:

Thomas Tull may end up making a fortune on “Godzilla vs. King Kong,” but the Legendary Entertainment founder and CEO admits that he had far more primal ambitions for backing the monster mash-up.
