Buddy Has His Fly Mask

Above, Buddy before the mask was put on him. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

For some reason, the flies have been thick this year in Jamestown, New Mexico.

This presents a torment to people and animals outside. As I had to go to Tractor Supply anyway yesterday, I picked up a horse fly mask for Buddy, the horse next door.

Above, another shot of Buddy before the mask was put on. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Last evening, Mike, his owner got home and I went over with the mask and mike put it on Buddy. It was surprisingly easy to put on. Buddy was a little jumpy, not too bad, but he settled down after the mask was on him.

Above, relief at last. Buddy with the mask on. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

It shielded his eyes from the flies and he was able to see through the mask.

Mike has a number of fly traps around Buddy's pen and they were each loaded with them. But there were still more flies buzzing around. Hopefully, the invasion will die down since the lifespan of a fly is generally 15 to 30 days (depending on conditions). Two of the photos above show one of the fly traps hanging at Buddy's corral.

I absolutely hate flies. They are filthy disease-carriers. They walk around on crap and other rotting things, then walk around on you or your food, transmitting the germs they carry on their sticky feet. They also crap all over which also transmits disease. If people would kill every fly they can and clean up or cover their garbage, fly numbers could be greatly reduced. Sometimes if I can catch a live fly, I will toss it into a nearby spider web and watch the spider kill it; that's how much I hate them. I call on all Americans to make a concerted effort to kill every fly possible! Death to flies!!

Yes, it is an act of kindness to feed a poor hungry spider in the way you describe. I fully endorse it. It is one's civic duty! - A.
