Today in history, Monument Valley Tribal Park was established.

According to Havasu News:

1958: The 30,000-acre Monument Valley Tribal Park, the first park established on the Navajo reservation, was established by a resolution of the Navajo Advisory Committee of the Navajo Tribal Council.

The films of John Ford and John Wayne such as Stagecoach (1939), The Searchers (1956) and others brought national and world attention to the area with its fantastic rock formations. Monument Valley is part of the Navajo Nation.
