Did you know that today is World UFO Day.

What's World UFO Day?

According to the Business Standard:

Every year on July 2, people all over the planet observe World UFO Day. This extraordinary day is all about studying the Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and bringing people together to discuss possibilities of life beyond Earth. In 2024, World UFO Day falls on a Tuesday.

Happy World UFO Day!

Yes, today is World UFO Day, which is to bring awareness to strange aerial phenomena that have baffled generations.

To celebrate, USA Today has an article on the top 5 states with the most UFO sightings.

They begin it with:

The truth is out there. Extraterrestrials are more likely to visit from the North.  

That’s one way, anyway, to interpret the results from a new report on the states with the most unidentified flying object sightings per capita. Washington State topped that list, followed in order by Montana, Vermont, Alaska, and Maine. 

Or maybe Northerners just believe more. 

So much for Roswell, New Mexico, or the lonely Nevada desert. New Mexico came in 8th on the list; Nevada 13th. 

Meanwhile, the states with the least frequent UFO sightings per capita — Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama -- are all down South. 

The list was put together by the analysts and space nerds at internet provider SatelliteInternet.com, which culled data from the National UFO Reporting Center and the U.S. Census, to attract attention in time for World UFO Day on July 2. (Yep, there is such a day.)

Tomorrow Is World UFO Day

Get ready to celebrate tomorrow!

You may ask, "Celebrate what?"

Tomorrow is World UFO Day and The Independent (U.K.) has an article about it and the "best" places to go alien-spotting.

They begin with:

The chances of anything coming from Mars may be a million to one, but the odds aren’t that slim for the rest of the universe. On World UFO Day on 2 July, here are the best places to go extraterrestrial spotting (or, at the very least, pick up an alien keyring).

International UFO Cover-Up

It seems that other nations have been engaging in cover-ups of UFO (Unidentified Flying Objects) sightings over the years along with the United States.

The Daily Mail (U.K.) has an interesting article on this.

It begins with:

Are we alone? Unfortunately, neither of the answers feel satisfactory.  

To be alone in this vast universe is a lonely prospect.  

On the other hand, if we are not alone and there is someone or something more powerful out there, that too is terrifying.  

As a NASA research scientist and now a professor of physics, I attended the 2002 NASA Contact Conference, which focused on serious speculation about extraterrestrials.  

During the meeting a concerned participant said loudly in a sinister tone, 'You have absolutely no idea what is out there!'  

The silence was palpable as the truth of this statement sunk in. 

Humans are fearful of extraterrestrials visiting Earth. Perhaps fortunately, the distances between the stars are prohibitively vast.  

At least this is what we novices, who are just learning to travel into space, tell ourselves.

By the way, according to the article, July 2 is World UFO Day (celebrate accordingly?). Also, the annual Roswell UFO Festival begins July 6.

World UFO Day 2014

Did you know that today is World UFO Day?

Yes, for some it is. For others, World UFO Day is celebrated on June 24.

According to Wikipedia:

World UFO Day is an awareness day for people to gather together and watch the skies for unidentified flying objects. The day is celebrated by some on June 24, and others on July 2. June 24 is the date that aviator Kenneth Arnold reported what is generally considered to be the first unidentified flying object sighting in the United States, while July 2 commemorates the supposed UFO crash in the 1947 Roswell UFO Incident.

Back in the late 1960s, I was a member of the Science-Fiction Book Club. Several of their book offerings were books on unidentified flying objects. The first UFO book I bought through them was Flying Saucers--Serious Business. I still have the book. I have since bought several other books on UFOs in the ensuing years.

Years before my mother passed away, she told me that my great-uncle, who was in charge of the U.S. Army hospitals in the Southwest U.S. in the late-1940s and was in New Mexico at the time, told her that the Roswell, New Mexico incident was true. Allegedly, a flying saucer crashed on a ranch near Roswell and alien bodies (along with the craft) were recovered by the U.S. government. At first, government authorities confirmed that a saucer and alien bodies were recovered, but later changed their story to say that the flying saucer was a weather balloon.

The Roswell incident has been a continuing controversy ever since.
