When people, in general, hear "Japan Rail Pass", it is usually the pass usable in all of Japan.
But there are also regional rail passes available to visitors (they still have to purchase them in their home countries and bring the voucher to redeem in Japan) and Live Japan discusses four of them available from JR East.
I used a JR East 5-day rail pass to go to Tohoku in 2006 (pictured at top).
They begin with:
