Kaiser Willys Jeep Recognizes Presidents Day

One of the businesses I patronize for parts for my 1952 Jeep is Kaiser Willys Jeep.

I received an email from them and it includes an advertisement for their Presidents Day sale. With the ad is a photo of President Ronald Reagan driving his 1962 CJ-6 Jeep.

As this coming Monday is Presidents Day, major banks will be closed and there will be no mail service.

Old Post Office Being Dismantled

This morning, following our group coffee at Denny's, I went over to the Flying J to buy a few things and I noticed that the old post office is already being dismantled.

Gone now are the post office boxes. There is just only a big opening in the wall where the boxes used to be.

Now, we have to travel eight miles east to Continental Divide to pick up our mail. It is a pain in the ass. It'll be worse come winter.  

The USPS: Does It Know What It's Doing?

I am currently awaiting an international package.

Before the United States Postal Service got a hold of it, the tracking indicated things were going smoothly in Europe. It reached New York Customs and cleared it relatively fast.

Then, it was sent pretty fast to the USPS Distribution Center in Albuquerque from New York. From there, it arrived two days ago to Gallup. I figured that I would arrive in Jamestown yesterday.

I checked the tracking when it didn't show up at our post office and it indicated it was sent back to Albuquerque yesterday.

I received a USPS email stating that it left Albuquerque last night at 11:11 and is en route to its destination. There has been no entries since. (I have signed up for email updates.)

Sometimes I really wonder if the United States Postal Service even knows what the heck it's doing.

The package showed up this morning.

We May Lose Our Post Office

This morning, I went over to the post office at the Flying J and found it closed with no new mail in our post office boxes.

The p.o. mistress called off and the Flying J doesn't want to have Rihanna (who ran the post office until about a month ago) doing any back-up. 

I spoke with the manager and he said that they only get $10,000/year for the post office from the Postal Service and that doesn't cover the Flying J's costs.

Also, he said that it will probably be closed down in a month and we'll likely have to get our mail in Gallup. 

Unless the Postal Service forks over more cash, we'll lose our post office. If we have to go into Gallup for our mail, we're screwed unless they can have it moved to either Fort Wingate or Church Rock, where there are existing post offices. 

We'll have to wait and see what happens. 

Maybe we ought to hold a protest and block the road to the Flying J. 😄

From The Mailbox

For the first time since last Thursday, I was able to pick up my mail down at the post office.

There were a number of goodies in the mailbox, most notably G-FAN #136 and one of my recent 2022 Canadian maple leaf five dollar silver coins featuring Elizabeth R's image on one side. (I have two more of these coins on order from a different coin company.) It came with a copper "Don't Tread On Me" coin as a bonus.

G-FAN #136 should be considered a special tribute issue to the late actor Akira Takarada as there are several articles on this definite fan favorite. The issue closes with an article from yours truly.

Russian Christmas Card

To describe the postal service from the Russian Federation to the U.S. as "snail mail" would be a vast understatement.

I knew beforehand that it would be slow, but not this slow.

Yesterday, I received the above Christmas card from Asya in St. Petersburg, Russia. I let her know in an email that I received it and thanked her.

Her response:

Hi Armand!
Finally! Im happy to hear that! Took 5 weeks? Huh, not that fast!
Was the envelope torn? Inspected? or arrived unbroken?

I let her know that it arrived in fine shape. Apparently, it did not interest the KGB (or whatever they have these days) not the CIA or FBI.

I was impressed with the print quality of the card (the above scan doesn't do it any justice).
