Driving and Working On The Jeep

If I weren't out driving the Jeep around our community, I was in the garage working on it.

The temperature outside is a nice 52°, which is a little warmer than yesterday. Nice driving weather.

Part of my drive today was to go down to the Flying J to pick up some machine screws and nuts to strengthen the new side view mirror. The parts that attach the mirror arm to the Jeep body wasn't exactly a perfect match (the dealer is checking on finding something that would work better). In the meantime, the tinkering I did with parts from the old mirror arm and the screws and nuts did strengthen the new mirror arm very well.

It took me about an hour to get things to work. Amazing what a little "Mickey Mousing" can do!

Right now, I am just going to take a break and probably do some more driving.

Japan Travel: Haneda or Narita Airports?

In nearly 20 years since I first visited Japan (I have been there 8 times), I have never flown in or out of Tokyo's Haneda Airport. All my flights to and from Japan have been at Narita Airport. Therefore, I would not be a good source for any differences between the two airports.

Fortunately, Live Japan has an article on just what the differences are and how to get two and from each one.

They begin with:

Renovated Shibuya Station Now Open

Longtime visitors to Tokyo, Japan will likely not recognize Shibuya Station anymore.

The station had been renovated with new platforms and entrances.

According to the Japan Times:

Tokyo’s oldest subway line got a brand-new station Friday in the tourism and nightlife hub of Shibuya, which is rapidly transforming ahead of the Olympics this summer. 

The Ginza Line’s new Shibuya Station has a platform that’s twice as wide as before at 12 meters across, compared with some 6 meters for the former one, and a wavy roof shaped like the letter M that could become a new icon of the district. 

A short distance away from the previous station, the new station is expected to make it easier for passengers to transfer to and from the capital’s busy Yamanote Line of East Japan Railway Co. and other train services.

Today was the warmest day in quite a while. It got to around 47° this afternoon (it is about 44° now).

Tomorrow is expected to be a little warmer at 50°.

A Little Drive

Since today's temperatures will be in the low 40s, I decided that it is favorable enough conditions to get the Jeep out for a little drive.

First, I went down to the Flying J to pick up some things that I forgot to get earlier today.

After that, I went partway up Maverick Road in the new Mesa Ridge Ranch subdivision. The road is somewhat a steep one and it was still snowy and icy. I thought it best not to go all the way up as the drive down would be a bit tricky.

I then drove around our subdivision and saw that Chris Schumacher's home and garage (it is so big that some of us refer to it as a "convention center") is taking shape.

It was a nice day to do some driving. I will probably go out tomorrow as it is supposed to be up around 51°.

Gun Confiscation Squad For Virginia Coming?

News coming out of Virginia seems to indicate that the Democrats who control the state's government may be forming a "gun confiscation squad". This sounds like something that Mao, Stalin and Castro would do.

According to Liberty Nation:

Like the 2011 Virginia earthquake, gun control proposals rumble through the Commonwealth once again. The latest is Governor Ralph Northam’s (D) budget proposal, which includes – among other things – what sure seems to be funding for a gun confiscation squad. 

Democrats showed their intent to turn Virginia from a state that broadly respects the rights of its residents to bear arms to one that seizes and destroys those guns right after the November elections.  Over 100 cities and counties have declared “sanctuary” pledges to uphold the Second Amendment rights of the people, but the state hasn’t backed down. This led to an opinion from the Democrat Virginia Attorney General proclaiming the sanctuary movement a big legal nothing.  And now we have this very anti-gun budget proposal.

Hollywood Loon Rose McGowan Hit With Backlash

Actress Rose McGowan really stepped into it when she Tweeted an apology to Iran for the drone strike that killed Iran's mastermind of terror. A big backlash by her Twitter followers blasted McGowan with some suggesting she move to Iran.

"Move to Iran" is trending on social media.

Newsweek reported:

Rose McGowan's tweeted apology to Iran early Friday morning was met with swift and harsh backlash on Twitter. 

"Dear #Iran, The USA has disrespected your country, your flag, your people. 52% of us humbly apologize. We want peace with your nation. We are being held hostage by a terrorist regime. We do not know how to escape. Please do not kill us. #Soleimani," McGowan tweeted along with a gif of a waving Iranian flag. 

Her apology followed confirmation that President Donald Trump ordered the drone strike on Baghdad that killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force. 

McGowan's message sparked instant outrage from Twitter users who pointed out Soleimani's controversial history of aligning with terrorist organizations in the Middle East and ordering the killing of Americans. The Pentagon also recently said Soleimani and the Quds Force were to blame for the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad on December 31. Some even suggested she move to Iran.

McGowan later tried to walk back her apology, saying she "freaked out", but even this was met with ridicule.

A Little Warmer This Weekend

We in Jamestown, New Mexico won't have to be concerned about snow showers until Thursday.

As for the weekend, it is going to be a little bit warmer than it has been. We'll be seeing temperatures tomorrow in the 40s and in the 50s on Sunday. That's a nice break from the 20s and 30s we've been experiencing.

Book Shinkansen Tickets Outside of Japan

For those planning to vacation in Japan this year and who want to get tickets to ride a shinkansen, coming March, they can...from the comfort of their home home computers!

Japan Today reported:

Tokyo - Central Japan Railway Co and West Japan Railway Co plan to expand their bullet train ticketing services for foreign customers in response to the boom in tourists arriving in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. 

The operators of the Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen lines, which connect popular tourist destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka, said in December they will introduce English-language ticket reservation services on a new website in March. 

The railway companies already offer smartphone apps that allow foreigners to book shinkansen tickets while overseas but they are only available in eight countries and regions, such as the United States, Singapore and Thailand. 

The new website will allow people across the globe to book shinkansen tickets before arriving in Japan.

Ten Years: The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan

Incredible as it may seem, it was ten years ago this month that The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan was published by ComiXpress.

Unfortunately, although their website still exists, ComiXpress is no longer in business. They ceased operating in 2013. That, plus the medical emergency I had two summers ago, had put a crimp on my plans to publish an updated edition. I still intend to do so.

But, fortunately, before they went "belly up", I had ordered plenty of copies and I still have them available.

Guide To Tokyo

With all the attention on Tokyo this coming summer during the 2020 Olympics, it will be no surprise that more people will be thinking seriously about going to Japan.

Dawg Search & Rescue Mission

Any excuse to do some Jeeping is a good excuse, I always say.

That opportunity came this afternoon when I was awakened from a nap (ah, retirement) to find that friend Larry's chow, Neeko, got loose and bolted.

After finishing a cup of coffee, I got the Jeep out and headed up the hill. Mind you, Larry's lives a mile up the hill in our community, which is 200 feet higher than where I live. That makes a bit of a difference when it comes to snowfall.

I figured it would be better to drive the Jeep up there to look for Neeko. My neighbor, Bo, was already heading up (he also got a call).

When I got there, Bo told me that Neeko already went home on her own. I kind of figured that would happen. All's well that ends well.

We have a great community where everyone looks after one another and pitches in whenever assistance is needed.

Well, at least I got the Jeep out to do some unplanned driving and had some fun at the same time.

A little while ago, I finished doing some snow shoveling before it turns into slippery ice.

An Inch of New Snow

The National Weather Service said we'd get about an inch or two of snow overnight and into today and that is what I seeing in the yard.

It is more like an inch of new snow added to what's already on the ground from last weekend.

60% Chance of Snow Showers Tonight

Yesterday, the National Weather Service forecast the chance of precipitation for tonight at 40%. Now, that had been bumped up to 60% with snow showers tonight, mainly after midnight.

So it appears that our respite after last weekend's snowstorm is coming to an end. At least I now have The Beast in the GOCO Beast Barn for safe keeping.

With the arrival of a storm, at least the temperature at night won't be as cold as last night's 3°.

The good thing is, the snow will be ending after tomorrow for the next several days.

The forecast for tonight and tomorrow:

Tonight

Snow showers likely, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Thursday

Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 33. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday Night

Mostly clear, with a low around 13. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

New Year's Day Drive

After sitting inside the garage for two weeks, I finally got the Jeep out of the garage for a little driving. The temperature was 37° when I took it for a spin.

First, I drove around the community to get it more warmed up and then headed down to the Flying J to pick up a few things.

Now that Six Mile Canyon/Cibola National Forest is closed to vehicles until March, I am somewhat limited on where I can drive. It is not really a vehicle for freeway driving (only for very short distances).

Still, I had a little fun with the amount of driving I did today.

NJ Governor Bans Sale of Insurance To Gun Owners

Here we are celebrating New Year's Day and already I am posting the first Looney Left Report for 2020.

Here goes:

Something must be wrong with New Jersey's water or something. Or just maybe the Democrat Party is infected by an epidemic of insanity.

Law Enforcement Today reported:

Just when we thought that no one could out do California or New York in the category of idiotic gun-control measure, in walks New Jersey. Here is their latest attempt to circumvent the 2nd Amendment and discourage responsible gun use by trying to make self-defense too costly a choice. 

We’re just learning about an executive order that the governor issued in September that effectively banned the sale of insurance products that provide liability coverage to gun owners making it virtually impossible for concealed carry holders in New Jersey to get coverage. 

Governor Phil Murphy’s order specifically said the state should, within 30 days, take all appropriate action “to prohibit and/or limit the sale, procurement, marketing, or distribution of insurance products that may serve to encourage the improper use of firearms,” according to a press release from the governor’s office.

Hopefully enough sane voters head to the polls this year to vote out these lunatics.

Safely Inside The GOCO Beast Barn

Thanks to the plowing yesterday by neighbor Bo, I was able to put The Beast inside the GOCO Beast Barn a little while ago.

Before heading to our morning coffee gathering at Denny's today, I positioned The Beast in front of the Beast Barn. It is best to do so while the ground was still frozen so the RV wouldn't get stuck in the mud. The ground is so saturated with water, it freezes in below zero temperatures. It was around 18° when I moved The Beast.

According to my friends at the coffee, it got down to 3° last night. Nobody heard any gunshots or fireworks last night for New Year's. It was probably too cold out to even bother.

After coffee, I opened the Beast Barn door and back the RV inside. Already, I noticed, the ground was thawed out and getting muddy. So it was a good thing I moved The Beast while the ground was still frozen.

When temperatures warm up in the spring, The Beast will get a thorough washing. It is dirty from the drive in the Arizona snow when I came back from California.

They reminded me that nine years ago that a post I made in 2011 was the "most liked" photo of that year.

I was a photo of me taken by the Daily Yomiuri at the Godzilla statue in Hibiya Chanter Square for their article of December 24, 2010 about The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan.

I made the trip to Japan to promote the travel guide and was interview by several Japanese newspapers.

2019 In Review

Another year has ended and a new one has started.

2019, for me, wasn't too bad. At least I didn't have any medical emergencies like I did in 2018 and no family funerals to have to attend.

I am settled in at Jamestown, New Mexico. There plenty of friends here and things to see and do.

There are rodeos during the summer, the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, nightly Indian dances, hot-air balloon rally and other things going on.

Winter 2018-2019

2019 started with a big snowstorm over New Year's. The snow lasted for weeks. Wintertime is generally the quiet period in New Mexico, at least in the Gallup area.

We did have one event. Hundreds of irate gun owners urged the McKinley County Board of Commissioners to declare the county a "Second Amendment Sanctuary County" against radical liberal gun control laws the Democrats are passing. The county did so declare itself.

Spring

In April, the Lost Dutchman Chapter of E Clampus Vitus held its spring clampout at Wilhoit, Arizona, which is near Prescott. On the way there, I drove through Sedona, Arizona for the first time in over 30 years. The place really has built up.

Also in April, Mitch Geriminsky and I took a cruise to Havana, Cuba from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with an all-day stopover jn Key West. Key West is a fun place and I would like to spend more time there. Maybe this year I will. Havana was interesting. We took a bus tour around the city and stopped to buy souvenirs, rum and, of course, cigars. The people were very friendly and we got to see the famous 1950s American automobiles around the city.

In May, rodeo season started up with the junior high and high school rodeo at Red Rock Park. Beginning on Memorial Day (through Labor Day), the nightly Indian dances begin at the McKinley County Courthouse plaza.

The Lions Club and Best of the Best rodeos were held in June, which I attended.

Summer

In early July, I flew to Chicago's O'Hare Airport to attend this year's G-FEST (Godzilla convention) at the Crowne Plaza in Rosemont, Illinois. This was the first G-FEST I've attended in ten years and it was good to see many friends for the first time in years.

The plan for late July was to meet up with Bill Wilson at the Wells Fun Run car rally in Wells, Nevada. It was at last year's Wells Fun Run that I had my heart attack and had to have two stents put into a coronary artery. Mitch Geriminsky and I didn't go to Wells (except for a lunch break) for the rally. Bill had come down with a type of blood cancer a few months prior, so he couldn't attend. So, we went instead to his house in Buhl, Idaho and hung out there for a few days. Many others skipped the Wells Fun Run and also went to Bill's. We had a good time there.

After a few days in Buhl, Mitch and I went to Jackson, Wyoming for a few days. We wandered around Jackson and took a ride on the aerial tramway. We took a driving tour of Grand Teton National Park and into Yellowstone National Park (just to Old Faithful Geyser). Mitch came down with altitude sickness, so he couldn't join me in a Snake River whitewater rafting trip. This was the first time in decades since I did any whitewater rafting. It was great fun!

After coming home, I bought a zero-turn riding mower and a minibike. Yard work was never so much fun since I bought the mower. I have been enjoying riding the minibike around the community.

Weeks later, a great deal on a 1952 Willys Jeep M38A1 fell into my lap. So I bought it and have been enjoying drives into nearby Six Mile Canyon in the Cibola National Forest. I was planning on getting an off-road vehicle of some sort, and the Jeep (being four-wheel-drive) fit nicely.

My cardiologist always wants me to exercise. He was pleased about me getting the Jeep. Since it has no power steering, it is giving me some good arm and upper body workouts on OHV roads.

In August, we held a plaque dedication at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup with the Lost Dutchman Chapter of E Clampus Vitus. I helped to arrange the event and getting a Zuni Pueblo dance group to perform at the ceremony. Clampers who attended had a great time.

I joined the Lost Dutchman Chapter again in September at their fall clampout in Cool Springs, Arizona on old Route 66. Our next clampout will be in April in Quartzsite, Arizona.

Autumn

Outside of doctors appointments, there wasn't too much going on. I continued to take drives into Cibola National Forest with the Jeep until it closed for the winter on December 15. It will re-open in March.

In November, I did some Christmas shopping at the monthly Crownpoint, New Mexico Indian Rug Auction. And, I spent Thanksgiving with Roberta and Nandoh Munoz in Jamestown.

Also in November, I attended the Cowboys for Trump ride in Grants, New Mexico. It was a fun event with many attendees riding on horseback and assorted vehicles.

Winter 2019-2020

I took a nine day RV trip to my cousin's in Wildomar, California for the Christmas holiday. I spent a few days in Lake Havasu at Mitch Geriminsky's while en route. We took a drive to Oatman, Arizona for the day. I hadn't been there since the 1980s. It was fun seeing the town and the wild burros wandering the town's streets.

Early in December, I attended the Red Rock Balloon Rally at Red Rock Park near Gallup. It was 25° outside, but I had fun anyway.

2020 looks to be an interesting year with the elections coming up. I am looking forward to it.

40% Chance of Snow Showers Tomorrow Night

This is the last day of 2019. But the weather has plans for New Year's night.

They are giving a 40% chance of snow showers tomorrow night.

As for tonight, it is already around 20° outside.

I was almost tempted to get some fireworks for tonight at the Flying J (yes, they sell them and they aren't the wussy kind one gets in California) since most everything is covered in snow. But too many of us on our street have animals and would spook the heck out of them. Oh, well.

Hopefully, the weather and all will be good enough to do some Jeep driving tomorrow. It's been over two weeks since I last got it out of the garage.

Tonight

Partly cloudy, with a low around 16. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph after midnight.

New Year's Day

Increasing clouds, with a high near 36. West wind 5 to 15 mph.

Wednesday Night

A 40 percent chance of snow showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. West wind 10 to 15 mph. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
