Silver Jumps To 2-Month Highs

Above, a 2023 American Silver Eagle proof coin. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

There are times when I am glad that I invested in silver when I did. This is one of those times.

Silver has risen to the highest prices since February.

According to MSN:

Spot silver surged above $85 an ounce for the first time in nearly two months as technical buying and momentum-driven trades fueled a powerful rally that has lifted the metal’s prices roughly 15% this month.

At the time of writing, spot silver (XAG/USD) was up nearly 6% to $85 an ounce, while silver futures for July 2026 deliveries also climbed nearly 6% to $85.6 per ounce. Last week, Spot Silver posted its strongest weekly performance since late February.

Which Coins Contain The Most Silver?

Above, a 2023 American Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Gold and silver have been "on a tear" in their respective spot prices during these past few months.

Silver is a lot more affordable to the average American citizen. Before investing, one should look into which coins contain the most silver content. American Silver Eagles contain exactly one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

CBS News posted an article on this question.

They begin it with:

When precious metals hit new price milestones, investor attention tends to focus on the headline-grabbers. Right now, that's gold, as the price of gold has been on a swift uphill climb over the past few months. In turn, it has hit surprising new thresholds — including a brief stint above $5,600 per ounce — and is now hovering at about $5,166 per ounce. But the price of silver has been on a tear of its own, making it a good option for investors who want exposure to precious metals without tying up quite as much capital in a single purchase.

And that's where certain types of silver coins, in particular, can offer big value to investors, especially in today's market. These small silver assets are tangible, widely recognized and come in sizes that feel manageable to a wide range of investors. You can buy one silver coin at a time, build a stack gradually or choose larger-format pieces if you're comfortable moving more money per purchase. In a precious metals market where prices can swing quickly and dramatically, flexibility matters.

What Is A 1-Ounce Silver Eagle Worth Today?

Above, a 2025 American Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Over the past few years, I have purchased American Silver Eagle coins. This year has been different as the price of them rose to levels that I felt not worth the expense.

Silver rose to over $100 per troy ounce since the beginning of the year, but is now in the $70-80s.

The question arises, What is a 1-ounce Silver Eagle worth today?

CBS News provides some answers.

They begin with:

The silver market just experienced one of its wildest rides in decades. After rallying from about $30 per ounce at the start of 2025 to over $100 per ounce in early 2026, silver prices plunged to under $80 per ounce in a matter of days, wiping out most of the year's gains and triggering subsequent volatility. The dramatic price swings reflect silver's dual nature as both a precious metal and an industrial commodity, which makes it particularly sensitive to shifts in policy, currency fluctuations and manufacturing demand.

Yet despite the recent price correction, silver continues to trade at levels that seemed unthinkable even just 18 months ago, and the factors that drove its rally — including several consecutive years of supply deficits and surging industrial demand — remain largely intact. So, for those holding or considering silver assets, the question becomes not just what silver is worth today, but whether the current trajectory represents opportunity or risk.

And, that's particularly true for investors who are holding more unique silver assets, like American Silver Eagle coins, which are priced much differently than a generic silver bar or round. So, what is the value of a 1-ounce Silver Eagle coin in today's market, and what helps to drive that price differentiation? That's what we'll examine below.

US Mint Hikes Silver Coin Prices

Above, a 2025 American Silver Eagle I bought last year. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Over the past several years, I have been buying American Silver Eagle coins each year. The last American Silver Eagle I bought was a 2025.

Based upon the following, it looks like I won't be buying any 2026 American Silver Eagles.

Resell Calendar reported:

The US Mint dropped massive price increases across their silver lineup yesterday, with some coins rising nearly 90% from previous prices. Silver tripled from $30 to over $90 per ounce in the past year, and the Mint finally adjusted pricing to match. This kills most reselling margins on Mint products going forward and significantly impacts anyone holding subscriptions for automatic shipments.

New Prices on US Mint Silver Proofs

The Mint had been sitting on pricing that didn’t reflect reality. When silver was $30-40 per ounce, selling uncirculated Silver Eagles at $91 made sense. But silver climbed to a record $93.77 on January 14 before settling around $89-90 currently. That’s a 200% increase in basically one year.

The Mint temporarily suspended silver sales earlier this week to implement the price changes. Products started coming back online yesterday with the new pricing. The 2024 Uncirculated Silver Eagle that retailed for $91 is now $169. The 2023 version also jumped to $169 from its previous $91 price point.

How Much Should You Pay For 1 Ounce of Silver?

Above, a 2023 American Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Since the spot price for silver has risen to over $70 per troy ounce over the past few months, I have curtailed my buying.

I bought a lot of it (mainly Morgan silver dollars) when the metal was around $25 to $35 per troy ounce.

What is the amount one should pay now for an ounce of silver? CBS News posted the answers in an article yesterday.

They begin it with:

Silver prices have surged dramatically in recent months. This precious metal price rally has been fueled by a combination of industrial demand, economic uncertainty and renewed interest in precious metals as an inflation hedge. And, with 1 ounce of silver now regularly trading at or near record highs, investors are clamoring to try and capitalize on the potential for future price growth. But if you're ready to add silver to your portfolio, you might be surprised to learn that the silver spot price you see quoted online is only part of the equation.

Silver Surges To 14-Year High

Above, a 2023 American Silver Eagle coin. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

The spot price of silver has reached a 14-year high in trading yesterday.

The rise in price is driven by industrial demand and other factors.

According to PRWeb:

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Silver prices have surged to their highest levels since 2012, nearly approaching the $40 per ounce mark. This remarkable rally highlights silver's growing importance as both an industrial resource and a store of value amid ongoing global economic uncertainties.

Experts say the key drivers of silver's momentum include:

Robust Industrial Demand: Nearly 60% of global silver demand now comes from industrial applications. Beyond traditional uses in electronics and manufacturing, silver is vital to rapidly growing industries, including renewable energy—especially photovoltaic (PV) solar panels—artificial intelligence (AI) components, and defense technologies.

Tight Supply: The boom in these industries has outpaced global silver production, creating a supply crunch that is driving prices higher. According to The Silver Institute, annual demand for silver rose from 993.3 million ounces in 2016 to 1.16 billion in 2024, while supply decreased from 1.06 billion ounces to 1.02 billion over the same period.

Market Headwinds: Heightened geopolitical tensions, trade uncertainties, and ongoing inflation concerns have added a safe-haven premium to precious metals, boosting silver prices alongside gold.

Silver Could Skyrocket To $100 An Ounce

Above, a 2025 American Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

If the following does come true and silver does reach $100 per troy ounce, those who have invested in silver while it was in the twenty and thirty dollar ranges would be in great shape with their investment.

There are several reasons why it is possible that silver's spot price could reach $100 and Money Talks News discusses each of them.

They begin with:

While silver has been hovering in the $30-35 per troy ounce recently, some industry experts are making bold predictions about its future. First Majestic Silver CEO Keith Neumeyer has repeatedly called for silver to reach $100 per ounce or higher.

Is his prediction realistic or just wishful thinking? There are solid reasons why the white metal could potentially see a dramatic price surge to triple digits in the coming years, as outlined in a recent article by Investing News Network.

In times of economic uncertainty, many investors turn to precious metals as a store of value and hedge against inflation. While silver offers significant upside potential, diversifying with other precious metals can provide additional protection for your portfolio.

Step-By-Step Guide On How To Buy Silver

Above, a 2025 American Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

There is talk of a possible recession later this year. It is resulting in (some) people upping their gold and silver investing.

For me, gold is priced too high, whereas silver is much more affordable at its current spot price of $34.865/toz.

If one isn't experienced in precious metals investing, MSN posted an article on the step-by-step basis of buying silver.

It begins with:

Silver isn’t just a shiny metal you admire in jewelry or old coins. It’s been a trusted investment choice for centuries. Especially in today’s economic climate, investing in precious metals like silver is a solid choice.

If you’re thinking about adding silver to your portfolio but don’t know where to start, this guide will walk you through how to buy silver, step by step. Let’s jump right into breaking down how to buy silver.

2025 American Silver Eagle

The first coin collectible I bought this year arrived in today's mail.

It is a 2025 American Silver Eagle.

The current COMEX spot price for silver is at 34.490/toz. The price of the Silver Eagle was just four dollars above spot price.

There are some experts who think silver's spot price will hit 40-50 dollars by the end of the year. We shall see.

Here's the front and back of the 2025 American Silver Eagle:

Make Your Counterfeit Coins Legal To Own

Above, counterfeit Morgan and Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Did you know that counterfeit coins are illegal to possess, buy or sell?

According to ACEF, they are:

According to federal law, counterfeit coins are illegal to possess, buy or sell. Hence, once a victim becomes aware that a coin is counterfeit, he/she should turn it over to the nearest Secret Service agent or local law-enforcement official. Often that is impractical because of distance or law enforcement being reluctant to spend time to recover one or two counterfeit items, especially fake coins.

When I bought some counterfeit silver coins a few years ago through an ad in Facebook, I thought they looked wrong and tested them with a magnet. They stuck to the magnet. Silver is not magnetic. It turned out that they originated from China.

I notified the local sheriff and gave the coins to them as I was aware that they are illegal to possess. Thankfully, I got my money back when I notified my bank of the fraud.

However, one can possess counterfeit coins and ACEF tells you how to do so.

By the way, according to ACEF, the Morgan Dollar is the most counterfeited coin:

The Morgan silver dollar is the most frequently counterfeited U.S. coin, according to coin dealers responding to a survey conducted by the Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force in June 2018.

5 Reasons To Invest In Silver Bars and Coins

Above, 2024 American Silver Eagles. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Despite the gaslighting news media and His Fraudulency Joe Biden say, the economy is not in great shape.

There is a way to hedge one's finances against inflation. That's buying silver.

At least that is what CBS News is saying in a new article.

They begin with:

Investors are facing a fair share of economic challenges right now, including persistent inflation and the high interest rates meant to temper it. And, there are other factors, like geopolitical conflicts and ballooning government deficits, that are further impacting the economy and the investing landscape.

Today's unusual economic climate has, in turn, led many investors to look for ways to diversify their portfolios to protect their wealth and portfolio returns. One of the best ways to do that is to invest in safe-haven assets, like precious metals, to help offset losses from other investments.

While gold historically takes center stage in terms of precious metal investing, silver can also offer a unique value proposition. That's because, like gold, silver has long been a hedge against economic turmoil — and there are other good reasons to consider adding it to your portfolio today, too.

Silver Rises 1.65%

The spot price for silver has been in the doldrums for the past several weeks. It was in the $22.00/toz range last week. This was enticing enough for me to buy some 2024 American Silver Eagles.

However, silver has gone up 1.65% (at this writing) today. It is now at $23.250/toz.

Much of the increase in silver's spot price (and gold's) is attributed to the recent drone attack in Jordan that killed three U.S. servicemen.

According to Kitco News:

(Kitco News) - Gold and silver prices are mildly higher in midday U.S. trading Monday, but down from daily highs, on some safe-haven buying after a terrorist strike in Jordan killed three U.S. soldiers. February gold was last up $6.90 at $2,024.00. March silver was last up $0.248 at $23.12.

Risk aversion is keener to start the trading week after an Iran-backed Houthi drone strike against U.S. troops in Jordan killed three U.S. soldiers. President Biden said the U.S. would respond.

Will it go even higher or fall back down? We shall see.

My first coin purchase of 2024 arrived this morning.

The order was for 2024-W American Silver Eagle uncirculated coins. The "W" at the date indicates that they were minted at the West Point Mint in New York.

They were only $3.99 over spot price, which is a reasonable price.

Robert Kiyosaki: The No. 1 Asset Anyone Can Afford

Above, a 2023 American Silver Eagle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

There are a number of assests one can invest in.

But there is one asset one can invest in and it is one that anyone can afford. According to Robert Kiyosaki, that asset is silver.

From GoBankingRates:

Robert Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad” financial empire is based on changing people’s beliefs and attitudes toward saving and investing.

While most Americans pour their investment money into stocks and bonds, Kiyosaki says they overlook the one asset that everyone can afford and that offers the best financial protection going forward. For Kiyosaki, that asset is silver.

The financial personality conducted an interview with blogger, SilverSlayer on “The Rich Dad Channel,” discussing this very topic. Here are the highlights, along with a look at how you can incorporate silver into your own portfolio.

Higher Silver Prices Needed To Meet Solar Demand

Above, 2022 American Silver Eagles. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

"You're not going to go and melt grandmother's silver tea service at $35 an ounce."

Since silver is an important "ingredient" in solar panels, it's a wonder why the metal hasn't risen much higher than it has. A friend has solar panels at his house. We joke that we should undertake a guerilla operation to scrape the solar panels for the silver.

Right now, silver's spot price is hovering around $23/toz.

Along with solar panels, silver has other industrial uses. One even has silver inside their cell phones.

From BullionVault:

Today silver is invaluable to solder and brazing alloys, batteries, dentistry, glass coatings, LED chips, medicine, nuclear reactors, photography, photovoltaic (or solar) energy, RFID chips (for tracking parcels or shipments worldwide), semiconductors, touch screens, water purification, wood preservatives and many other industrial uses.

According to Kitco News, silver's prices need to go higher to meet solar demand.

They wrote:

(Kitco News) - Investment demand in silver has been fairly disappointing through most of 2023; however, one mining executive said that this is not the segment of the market investors should be paying attention to.

In an interview with Kitco News, on the sidelines of the London Bullion Market Association 2023 Global Precious Metals Conference, Phillips Baker, CEO of Hecla Mining, said that investors need to pay attention to industrial demand and the solar power sector continues to consume massive amounts of the precious metal.

"Right now, ETF demand is the sideshow. Silver's use in Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels is going to drive silver prices higher," he said. "This is not an issue that will be going away anytime soon. The need for Photovoltaic solar panels will drive demand for the next decade.

The bullish comments come as silver prices test resistance just below $23 an ounce, up 9.5% from September's multi-month lows below $21 an ounce.

According to data from the Silver Institute, in the last decade, silver demand has grown 150%. Last year, 140 million ounces of silver was used in solar panels. There are expectations that 160 million ounces will be used in solar panels this year, a 28% increase from last year.

Gold, Silver At Their Lowest Since March

Above, 2023 American Silver Eagle Proof. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Gold and silver sank in their respective spot prices to start off the month. Each hasn't been this low since March.

According to Coin News:

Precious metals started the new trading week and month on Monday with losses ranging from 1% for gold to 4.6% for silver. Both metals established significant settlement lows, reaching back to March for both.

Falling for the sixth consecutive session, gold for December delivery lost $18.90 to settle at $1,847.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. For a second straight instance, the settlement was the lowest since ending at $1,834.60 an ounce on March 9.

"Gold’s kryptonite is surging Treasury yields and a stronger dollar," Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA, told MarketWatch.

"Wall Street is having a major reset on where flows are going and that is clearly not gold’s way," he said. "Fixed income is all of sudden attractive and that killed the short-term outlook for gold."

Gold futures traded between $1,842.70 and $1,864.70. They lost 4.1% last week.

Elsewhere, silver for December delivery tumbled by $1.03 to $21.41 an ounce, marking its weakest settlement since closing at $20.506 an ounce on March 16. Silver futures ranged from $21.21 to $22.41. Last week, they sank 5.9%.

Since I consider silver investing is for the long haul, this doesn't bother me. I see it as an opportunity to buy more for less.

Slight Rebound For Gold and Silver

Above, 2022 American Silver Eagles. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Silver's COMEX spot price fell below $23.00/toz yesterday, but according to Kitco News, it has firmed up a bit this morning even though it is still below $23.00.

Kitco News reported:

(Kitco News) - Gold and silver prices are just a bit firmer in early U.S. trading Thursday, after this week's solid selling pressure that drove December gold futures to a 6.5-month low Wednesday. Some tepid short covering in the futures markets is featured in both metals today. A lower U.S. dollar index today is also a friendly daily outside market element for the metals markets. December gold was last up $2.40 at $1,893.30 and December silver was up $0.081 at $22.805.

Coins and Capital Gains Tax

Above, 2023 American Silver Eagle coin proof set. "Investors wanting to avoid reportable
sales should buy American Eagles," says Fisher Precious Metals. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Gold and silver as investments are long-term propositions. Don't expect to make huge profits from any sales of them in the short-term.

But, eventually one will decide to sell their coins or bullion, hopefully at a profit. However, that opens another can of worms: capital gains taxes.

Sales of gold and silver coins are subject to capital gains taxes. But there are thresholds that are favorable to sellers, provided they aren't exceeded.

One of the big coin and bullion dealers, APMEX, has posted this on the subject of capital gains taxes on silver:

Individual taxpayers who sell silver for a profit may be obligated to report a capital gain when filing their return. This is true for most types of collectibles such as coins, stamps, antiques, and comics. When selling silver coins in consideration of reporting to the IRS, you must report the sales of any combination of 90 percent silver US coins with a face value of over $1000 and 0.9999 fine silver bars totaling over 1000 troy ounces. Other items like silver bars and collectibles, need to be reported if the sales result in a capital gain. If you experience a significant loss when you sell your silver, you may benefit from reporting the loss.

According to Fisher Precious Metals:

Reportable Sales

Customer sales to dealers of certain precious metals exceeding specific quantities call for reporting to the IRS on 1099B forms. The 1099B forms are similar to other 1099 forms taxpayers commonly receive; the “B” means they have been issued by a business other than a financial entity.

Reportable sales (again, customer sales to dealers) apply to 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs, 1-oz Krugerrands, and 1-oz Mexican Onzas in quantities of twenty-five or more in one transaction. Reporting requirements do not apply to American Gold Eagles, no matter the quantities. Furthermore, reporting requirements do not apply to any fractional ounce gold coins.

Only one common silver product is reportable when sold: pre-1965 U.S. coins. The quantity that causes the filing of a 1099B, however, is not clear. The IRS bases its authority to require reporting on CFTC-approved contracts that call for the delivery of $10,000 face value. Consequently, many dealers do not report sales of pre-1965 U.S. coins unless the sale totals $10,000 face value; others report $1,000 sales.

Sales of American Silver Eagles, privately-minted Silver Eagles, and 100-oz silver bars are not reportable, no matter the quantity. Other precious metals products are reportable, but they are not covered here because the average investor does not trade them.

The best thing to do is to thoroughly check the IRS rules before making a sizable (over $1,000) sale.
