It seems like every week that there are hikers getting killed or lost in a national park.
Zion National Park in Utah has been getting more than its share of rescues this year, the number is above what park officials call "normal" for the park.
KJZZ reported one this week:
SPRINGDALE, Utah (KUTV) — 2021 has been the busiest year in recorded history for search and rescue crews in Zion National Park. So far this year, there have been more than 160 major search and rescues. Typically, they see around 110 in a year. And in the past four months alone, there have been five deaths.
"It's been one for the record books for sure,” said Daniel Fagergren, the park's chief ranger.
He said rescues are surging, especially in the east side of the park. On Saturday, they rescued a 79-year-old hiker in that area. John Fiske Burg was found after spending five days and four nights lost in the park.
The hiker was part of a Colorado hiking club. On Wednesday he ventured off on his own.
