It seems that the "camping bug" has bitten a number of foreign travelers of late.
Tsunagu Japan has posted a list of 10 campgrounds that should be of interest to foreign visitors. Japan does have RV rentals, but like driving a rental car in Japan, one must have a Japanese drivers license or an international drivers license in order to drive there.
But, visitors can tent camp or even rent a cabin at some of the campgrounds listed.
They begin their list with:
