Minimum Age To Buy A Gun

Cassandra McBride, "How Old Do You Have to be to Buy a Gun: A State Guide 2026"

How old do you have to be to buy a gun?

That is a question that pops up all the time, especially by those who are in the 18 to 21 age range.

Ammo.com posted a state guide that answers that question.

They begin with:

Report Highlights: Federal law states that eligible citizens must be over 21 to purchase a handgun and over 18 to purchase a long gun; however, state laws vary regarding private purchases.

Mystery Rifle Revisit

Above, the rifle in question. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

While going through some rifle cases I inherited from my dad, I came across one that had something inside.

I opened it up and found a bold-action rifle. It appeared to be Japanese as it had a symbol next to the serial that indicated the rifle came from the Nagoya Arsenal, which was in operation from 1923 to 1945.

Above, the Nagoya Arsenal symbol. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

There is nothing indicating who the manufacturer was.

The bolt on the rifle looks like stainless steel and may not be original to the gun. It also does not close all the way. The rifle does not indicate what caliber it is. I suspect that it is an Arisaka rifle and that is what members of Gun Owners of New Mexico also said it is, but sporterized.

Above, the rifle's other side. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Probably my best bet in correctly identifying the rifle's manufacturing company, model number and caliber is to take it to a gun shop (maybe Loeffler's Guns Etc. in Grants or Ron Peterson Firearms in Albuquerque).

Winchester 62A Pump Action Rifle

Above, my grandfather's Winchester 62A pump action rifle. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

Before I bought my Ruger 10/22 rifle, I primarily did target-shooting with my maternal grandfather's Winchester 62A .22 pump action rifle in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The 62A is known as a gallery gun that took .22 short, .22 long and .22 long rifle cartridges. When I shot with it, I used .22 long rifle cartridges.

Based on the rifle's serial number, it was made in 1947.

It is a good firing gun. The video below will show how easy and quick one can shoot with it. The next time we go shooting (most likely in the spring), I will bring it along.

NM Gun-Grabbers Have Made Their Move

It was inevitable. The Democrats who control the legislature in Santa Fe, New Mexico have made their move.

From Rep. Stefani Lord at 'X':

🚨They. Are. Coming. For. Your. Guns.🚨

@GovMLG is frothing at the mouth to pass this bill that bans ALL semi-auto rifles, leaving you with only bolt action, lever action, single shot, muzzleloaders, .22 caliber, and mandatory 10-round permanently fixed  (cannot be removed without a tool) magazines.

To keep track of this insanity, they WILL need a gun registry!

Here's the bill:

It used to be that Democrats were cautious during an election year. Not anymore. The ultra-left socialists have taken over the Democrat Party and are no longer cautious. They have put ideology over common sense and the constitution.

New Acquisition

Above, the Remington Model 870 Express 12 gauge shotgun. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

This morning was spent browsing Lake Havasu gun stores.

We (Mitch Geriminsky and I) were looking at 12 gauge shotguns. We stopped at a gun store owned by a Mason friend of Mitch's. He had some Remington Model 870 Express pump action 12 gauge shotguns. It was priced at $599. However, we got a good price for the gun. So I took it.

So, whenever I am in Lake Havaau on a Saturday, I can join Mitch and his group for skeet shooting with it.

News From The New Mexico Shooting Sports Association

Today, the hearing for the Preliminary Injunction against the governor's "public health order" was held in Federal Court in Albuquerque. The judge did not rule on the injunction today, but he extended the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) previously issued, noting that parks were included in the original "public health order" the TRO was granted against. The TRO has been extended through October 11th. The judge expects to rule on the injunction by that date.

It is worth noting that the governor's attorney present said the governor intends to extend her order beyond the initial 30 days it was issued for, and the governor herself has told the media she would like to return the scope of her order to its original language. This underscores why it is so important to continue to litigate this matter.

We will continue this fight, but we need your support too. Please continue to support NMSSAFirearms Policy Coalition, and Second Amendment Foundation.

New Mexico Shooting Sports Association Newsletter

One week into the 2023 legislative session, and it's in full swing already. Today in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee, HB9 passed on a party-line vote of 4-2.The next stop for the bill is the House Judiciary Committee. We will let you know when the bill is scheduled for that committee.

We have two more bills that we are watching. SB171 from Senator Soules would make it a felony to own certain semiautomatic handguns, certain types of ammunition, NFA firearms, and suppressors in New Mexico. While we are used to dealing with a large number of bad bills each session, the severity of the bills introduced has far surpassed anything we have seen before.

A Constitutional Carry bill, HB164, was introduced today by Representatives Block, Moya, Duncan, Mason, and Lord. The bill would allow you to carry a concealed firearm without a permit in New Mexico. It has long been our position to support Constitutional Carry, and we thank the sponsors for brining the bill forward.

We will send an update whenever the bills we are watching come up for a vote in a committee or the floor. We need everyone to get involved if we are going to stop this deluge of bad legislation.

2nd Amendment Foundation Sues California Over Gun Show Ban

California, that state that is under total control by left-wing Democrats, has been trying to chip away at citizens' Second Amendment rights. This includes the right to assemble at gun shows.

A federal lawsuit has been filed against a senate bill banning gun shows in public property.

AmmoLand reported:

BELLEVUE, WA – -(AmmoLand.com)-The Second Amendment Foundation has filed a federal lawsuit challenging California’s Senate Bill 264, a ban on gun shows held on public property that was passed and signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Joining SAF are the California Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. B&L Productions, Inc., d/b/a Crossroads of the West; Gerald Clark; Eric Johnson; Chad Littrell; Jan Steven Merson; Inc; Asian Pacific American Gun Owners Association; and the Second Amendment Law Center, Inc. The case is known as B&L Productions v. Newsom.

SAF is represented by noted civil rights attorney Donald Kilmer, who successfully represented SAF in overturning the ban on gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego County, where the defendants were ordered to pay plaintiffs close to half-million dollars in combined damages and attorney fees

Named as defendants in this case are California Gov. Gavin Newsom in his official capacity as Governor of the State of California, Attorney General Robert Bonta in his official capacity as Attorney General of the State of California, Karen Ross, in her official capacity as Secretary of California Department of Food & Agriculture, and Todd Spitzer, in his personal and official capacity as District Attorney of Orange County. The 55-page federal complaint was filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Stop Extreme Gun Control Package

All the gun grabbers conveniently like to forget who’s on the other end of the trigger of all this “gun violence.” - James Woods.

On a party-line vote, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives Judiciary Committee passed a horrible gun control bill. It is heading to house vote as early as this week.

This bill must be defeated.

According to the NRA-ILA:

Late last week, the House Judiciary Committee rammed through an extreme package of gun control measures on a party-line vote. If this terrible legislation becomes law, tens of millions of law-abiding gun owners would be turned into felons and their lawfully-acquired property would be subject to confiscation by federal agents. Nancy Pelosi plans to bring this to the U.S. House floor for a vote this week.

The bill, H.R. 7910, which was introduced and heard in committee in a matter of only three days, is a conglomeration of numerous other gun control bills.

The article goes through a litany of provisions.

Lung Blower

Last week, His Fraudulency Joe Biden said this:

A .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out, may be able to get it, and save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body.

This explains the following meme:

Biden Pushing 9mm Handgun Ban

When His Fraudulency Joe Biden claims he doesn't want to confiscate your weapons, you can be pretty certain that he's lying through his teeth.

The NRA-ILA points out his stance in a new article (June 2).

It starts off with:

If anyone was still questioning the Biden-Harris administration’s devotion to banning and confiscating law-abiding Americans’ firearms, all doubt was erased this weekend.

On May 31, President Joe Biden once again stated that he wants to ban 9mm firearms. Speaking with reporters outside the White House about a purported encounter with a “trauma doctor,” Biden stated,

They said a .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out — may be able to get it and save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body.

So, the idea of these high-caliber weapons is, uh, there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting. Remember, the Constitution was never absolute. You couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed. You couldn’t go out and purchase a lot of weaponry.

Biden went on to say,

I can’t dictate this stuff. I can do the things that I’ve done.  And any executive action I can take, I’ll continue to take. But I can’t outlaw a weapon.

The implication of Biden’s statement is clear to anyone other than a “fact checker” more interested in defending the president than checking any facts. Biden wants to outlaw 9mm firearms – the vast majority of which are the common 9mm handgun. It should also be noted that the president’s statement about the legality of cannons is an utter lie that even the left-wing press won’t defend.

Observers can be certain that Biden wants to ban 9mm pistols because the president has touted this policy twice before.

RV Travel: Full-time RVer safety

Personal safety is not something that I am overly concerned about while traveling. For one thing, I keep everything locked when I am not around and at night.

Also, I keep my 9mm pistol within easy reach and I've had gun training. My grandfather and father kept a "hogleg" with them while camping. I don't travel full-time. With gasoline now at $4.199 at the local Flying J, traveling is a bit cost-prohibitive even for short duration trips.

RV Travel has posted an article on full-time RVer safety.

They begin with:

Some contemplating a full-time life on the road are a bit concerned about safety. They read about crimes and wonder—how subject to the criminal element are folks in RVs? If you sit around the campfire, sooner or later there’s some sort of RV “crime story” bound to come up. But if you push your source for specifics, often things seem to get vague. Yes, we have heard of actual incidents where travelers have run into trouble—but in reality, it’s a very RARE situation.

RVs are pretty hard to break into, compared to the common home. After all, in the dark of night, a big old house presents a lot of places to sneak in. Your little old RV is so small if somebody breaks a window, it’s sure to wake you up. Burglars don’t want to let you know they’re coming.

Too, robberies most often involve planning: the neighborhood mini-mart, the bank, the liquor store, somebody’s home known to have valuables or lots of dough. By our transient nature, as RVers, we’re a whole lot harder to work into a well-planned robbery effort. Also, for some reason, there’s a prevailing view of RVers that we all carry sawed-off shotguns around, begging for the chance to “make my day.”

Great Ammo Shortage Of 2022 Isn’t Over

Above, Cabela's Albuquerque ammo shelves on January 24. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

How is the supply of ammunition these days?

That is a question gun owners are likely to be wondering about.

1945 (19fortyfive.com) discusses the current state of the ammo shortage.

They begin it with:

The Great Ammo Shortage of 2022 just won’t go away. You might struggle to find ammunition for your pistol, rifle, or shotgun this year. Reasons for the shortage range wide, from supply bottlenecks to a copper shortage and the war in Ukraine. The best solution might be to make your own bullets.

People are buying more guns, and there are a lot of new gun owners. In 2020, 20 percent of American gun purchasers had never before bought a firearm. Thirty-nine percent of people recently polled in the United States own at least one pistol, rifle, or shotgun, according to the General Social Survey, and FBI background checks tracked a 41 percent increase in gun ownership from 2019 to 2020. That adds up to 8.4 million new owners. These gun owners need ammunition. So, the demand side of the equation is easy to see.

Supply of ammunition is also a concern. People stocked up on rounds during the Covid-19 pandemic amid panic about the dwindling supply. Imports of ammunition fell 34 percent during the worst days of quarantine in 2020. There were periods during the pandemic when gun and ammo production stopped. Gun owners sensed these shortages and snapped up firearms and ammunition.

There was also a lull in supply when ammunition-maker Remington went bankrupt. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2018, and again in 2020. It was hard for Remington to produce enough bullets to keep up with demand until it got its affairs in order and sold itself to Vista Outdoors.

NRA-ILA Files "Friend of the Court" Brief In Hawaii Gun Control Case

Above, a tour bus view of the Hawaii State Capitol. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

The state of Hawaii thinks that the constitution doesn't apply to them. They have passed laws that are blatant infringements of their citizens' Second Amendment rights. Need I mention that the Democrat Party controls the state government?

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is looking into their laws (the case is Yukutake v. Shikada) and the NRA-ILA is involved. Given the history of the "Ninth Circus", I would not be surprised if this case eventually winds up in the U.S. Supreme Court.

From the NRA-ILA:

On Monday, NRA-ILA filed an amicus curiae (or friend of the court) brief in a case challenging Hawaii’s draconian permit-to-purchase and firearm-registration laws in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Aloha State does not make it easy for an individual to exercise their Second Amendment Rights. State law imposes many repetitive steps on tight deadlines. First, one needs to apply for a permit to purchase a handgun, which requires providing the Chief of Police with the handgun’s make, model, serial number, etc. If the permit is approved, the individual then has 10 days to complete the purchase. Then upon completion of the purchase, the seller inputs the handgun’s make, model, serial number etc., signs the permit, and has 48 hours to get it back to the Chief of Police. But that’s not the end of the process. The purchaser then has five days to bring the handgun into the police station for it to be inspected and registered, which is the third time that the handgun’s make, model, serial number, etc., get recorded.

These burdensome laws “were passed solely to ‘control’ how people exercise their Second Amendment rights,” the brief argues.

NMSSA Gun Legislative Alert

On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear HB9, the firearm owner liability bill. The bill creates criminal penalties for a gun owner if their firearm is accessed by a minor without the gun owners permission. Besides being unnecessary, as an adult can already be charged with a crime if they place a minor in a harmful situation through New Mexico's child endangerment laws, the bill would make it easy to target gun owners through civil fines. In the bill, a petition for a civil fine of $1,000 can be brought against an offending gun owner by anyone who is the parent or guardian of a minor. The committee meeting is scheduled to start at 1:30pm, the bill is the last on the agenda for the day. Here is the link to testify before the committee.

Today, HB68 was heard before the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee. It is an "omnibus" crime bill with multiple proposed changes to New Mexico Criminal Law. Today, the bill was amended to remove the proposed changes to firearm possession in "school zones." This is a positive change we had lobbied for. There are still some parts of the bill where we would like to see changes made, but the school zone language was our primary concern. The bill passed the committee 3-2 and now heads to House Judiciary Committee.

We are closely tracking HB156, the proposed ban on firearm magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. We will send an alert as soon as we have any details on when the bill may be heard. It is currently in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee. Below is the contact information for both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee. Additionally, here is a form email we developed with our partners at Better Together NM you can use to email your representatives to ask them to oppose HB9 and HB156.

House Judiciary Committee, they will hear HB9 on Monday. We are OPPOSED to the bill.

2nd Amendment Group Sues San Jose Over Gun Bill

It was inevitable that the city of San Jose, California would be sued over their sweeping new gun bill, but sued they were.

Yahoo News reported:

A gun rights group has filed a lawsuit against the City of San Jose, California, after the city passed a gun bill it argues will reduce firearms-related incidents.

"The City of San Jose has taken the unprecedented step of requiring virtually all gun owners within its city limits to pay unspecified sums of money to private insurance companies and an unspecified fee to an unidentified government-chosen non-profit simply to exercise their constitutional right to own a gun," reads a lawsuit filed by the National Association for Gun Rights Tuesday.

At issue is bill passed Tuesday by the City of San Jose that will require gun owners to purchase liability insurance and pay "use fees" that the city plans to invest in "evidence-based initiatives to reduce gun harm."

Gun Legislative Alert By The NMSSA

There are two legislative updates New Mexico gun owners need to be aware of and act on now. First, HB9, the mandatory storage bill was added to tomorrow's House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee schedule at the last minute. The bill would impose fines and criminal penalties on a gun owner whose firearm is accessed by a minor without the owner's consent. There are no exemptions for storing a firearm in a safe or by lock. Even if you are careful about how you store your firearms, you could still be charged with a crime in the bill. Further, anyone who is the parent of a child can attempt to enforce a $1,000 court fine for a minor accessing your firearms. We do not believe the bill has any public safety benefit, and our position to to OPPOSE the bill. Here is the link to testify before the committee tomorrow. The committee meeting will start at 1:30pm, and HB9 is the last bill on the agenda.

Second, today HB156 was filed today. It would make it a felony to posses a firearm magazine in New Mexico that holds more than 15 rounds. The bill's author, Representative Caballero, added in an appropriation for the enforcement of the proposed law so the bill wouldn't have to be called upon by the governor. That bill is also in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee.

Both HB9 and HB156 are in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee, below is the contact information for the members of that committee. We urge you to reach out to the committee members and ask them to OPPOSE both bills.
